Manual hub conversion.

Hello all,

Looking to swap in a set of manual hubs onto my 4Runner. I know I will need the following parts.

-Spindles from a Tacoma with locking hubs
-CV boots from a Tacoma with locking hubs
-New bearing and seal to retain the ABS
-Locking Hubs

Some people say that you can use the locking hubs from the 86-95 Pickup and 4Runner, others say you need to use ones from a Tacoma. Can anyone give me a straight answer?

-Thanks,

In all the research I've done for this I've never seen anyone use the older hubs. Not saying it can't be done. Good luck with it. Your 4runner sure is getting some nice upgrades. Does your tacoma feel left out?

I remember reading a write up of a member doing this last year i think, wasnt that hard and he had step by step instructions with pics. Just do a search and im sure youll find it

Pics in my build and check out Singtoe as he has pics and a prior thread on this I used for ref. Also a tech article on Sonoran Steel website. I used tacoma hubs as I was told the older truck hubs would not work.

Thanks guys! Sorry for the confusion but I am not confused about the installation, rather if I would be able to use a set of locking hubs from the 86-95 vehicles as I have a set sitting at home that I just rebuilt.

Txbonds, I don't suppose you know why they won't work? Different spline count?

I don't remember if its the spline count or what but I was talking with Steve at Sonoran about it and he is the one that told me they wouldn't and that I needed to stick with the 1st gen Tacoma hubs. Steve knows his stuff so I didn't question it further. :)

Lees wear on the front end. As stock your axles and front diff are always turning. Plus with manual hubs you can also lock or unlock one our both whenever you seem fit. You also get a small increase in mpg's from less rotational mass.

Poor Tacoma, it's waiting for me to finish the headers.

He knows his stuff no doubt. Enough said, i'll find some Taco hubs.

Wow, I had no idea. Looks like it was a good idea to change the front diff oil when I did the rear and tcase. I thought i was just being anal.

Locking hubs from a 95.5 to i think 99 will work, anything older will not.You don't need tacoma spindles, you can use yours from the runner. replace with the lock-out and manual hub and tacoma cv's. You will probably have to replaxce the bearings because they will most likely get destroyed pressing your old hubs out. You can keep your ABS also.

Doesn't the manual hub bolt directly to the spindle though?

You need the hub/spindle from a tacoma to pick up the stud mount holes for the manual hub base to bolt to but you can use the steering knuckle from your 4runner to keep abs.

Ah I think I understand so the part for the Tacoma spindle would be #18 on this diagram?

No, that's what I'm calling the steering knuckle. You can reuse the 4runner part there.

It's part number 10 that needs to come from 1st gen tacoma along with the manual hub assembly (parts 1, 2, 3 & 4) and corresponding CV axles.

Be aware though if you order parts 1,2,3,4 & 10 from online yota parts place you will still need the studs, cone washers, lock washers and nuts for the manual hub base, as well as the bolts for the manual hub lever/cover. You also still have to source the bolt with washer that fits into the end of the cv axle. These items are not shown in your diagram.

This will work for the manual hub base and saves about $100 over ordering from yota online parts place. It's what I used. http://www.marlincrawler.com/axle/f...ardware/hardware-front-hilux/8mm-hub-stud-kit
