Yeah, I think I read somewhere where old timers where talking about using them during WWII in the planes engines to stop something about lead build up if used in the fuel/oil. That when it came time to rebuild the engines they still looked new inside. I figure if it's good for airplanes engines then it should be good for an older cars motor...think I'm gonna try some next time I do an oil change.

Do plenty of research first, Joe, and not just on this forum. Oils have changed A LOT over the years, with more detergents and additives, etc.. Many times I've read where pros won't put a thing in their engine other than their motor oil, and if you stay diligent on your changes, nothing else is necessary to keep the engine clean. With regular changes, that engine will look beautiful inside many years from now. I do not have anything against Marvel's oil--this is just general advice.

i heard that adding zinc to your oil during an oil change will help. this is just a theory from an old mechanic but he said that in the 60's-early 90's there was zinc in the store bought oils and companies built motors to use that oil, when they took out the zinc the engines were starved of it. just a theory but im sure it wouldnt hurt. anyone ever heard this before?

I've heard same thing about the zinc...I believe it's popular with the classic car guys...think
they use shell rotella oil. The reason I was thinking of using the MMO is because the t4r I just bought recently has 240,000 miles and I'm not sure how well it was taken care by the last two owners.

Joe, you definitely need to separate the old from the new when considering things for your rig. The zinc idea, just like lead additives for unleaded fuel, is to offset problems in older vehicles that modern engines have solved with the hardware. Many additives for oil and fuel are intended mainly for those older engines and the different materials they used when building those.
I have a bottle of MMO at home that I bought for my old Supra to try and put some life back into the engine. I've thought about putting it into the T4R to try and it cleaned out and all that. I think it's thin because you can also put it into your fuel as an additive or stabilizer or something, IIRC from reading the bottle. So it'll probably burn off pretty easily while in the engine as a lubricant also, no? Like previously said, do your research and good luck. I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I recently bought my 4Runner and I don't know how well the previous owners took care of it.
I have a 91 YJ with the 4.0L. I use MMO in it every time I change the oil. If I don't the damn thing sounds like a diesel. Lifters are very noisy but it runs great. I swear by the stuff. Right at about 2500 miles the lifter noise returns and I know it's time to change the oil/MMO. I don't use it in either of my 4Runners but I do use it in my 98 S-10.

Next oil change in my 95 I'm going to add a quart to see if there is any effect. It ain't going to hurt anything. I say if you have a noisy valve train, go for it.

Yea, one of my Army buddies turned me on to it while he was still living with me and my (now) ex.

If you are talking about lead build up, that element isn't used in gasoline any more. It was added to prevent knocking in engines. I once gave my Dad a can of Marvel Mystery Oil for Christmas back when I was a teen. However, he never used it in his airplanes when he was buying and flying them starting in the 80's. I really don't think it is any help unless you are still burning leaded gasoline.
