its not cheap - at all unless you do the whole thing yourself and that will be quite difficult.

The 3M 1080 vinyl is the $hit. If you're planning on doing it yourself spend the extra money to get it. It'll make your life much easier.

its an 89 body has 230,000 the SR has 100,000. Literally 5min ago i made a build thread and I'm waiting for it to be approved then ill post it.

I have decided to do this to mine most likely this summer or fall depending on funding and time. I have researched vinyl a lot and it seems to not be that hard to wrap a car, as long as you do sections at a time and take your time while doing it. I've ran across this post and really liked how this guy did his car, even though it's a BMW. wrapped my car
The only thing I can foresee being a problem with wrapping the 4runner is that the roof and pillars are all one piece. So vinyling the roof and the body might be a little tougher with maintaining a uniform look. This guy used Oracal, I believe.

If you want to get a good look without many seams, the 4Runner is not the easiest of vehicles to do. Since the rear quarter panel feeds seamlessly all the way to the A pillar, that's on large piece of vinyl. It can be done in one large piece, I would start on the back then lay out the material all the way across the side (with the liner still on) and Trim off all the excess areas that would cover the doors and windows. These smaller pieces will be good for door bottoms and mirrors etc. I would estimate to wrap it properly you would need about 75 linear feet on a 60 inch roll. That will be more than enough, but you do not want to run out on a project like this. As fro the seams from the where the side panel meets the room, I would hide most of the seam under the roof rack rails, with them overlapping the roof portion, that way you do not see the seam as much.
I wrapped my hood today (it had been oxidizing for the last year+ and getting worse and worse) and went with matte black... certainly not that easy to work with a 5 foot by 5 foot sticker. I used the 3m 1080 film so that was actually pretty easy to work with... I first did the scoop insert (still needs to be redone but not today) and then the hood with the 5x5 piece - just barely enough. anyways, here are the pictures:

It wasn't easy - i had hoped i would do it and then think "that wasn't so bad, i should wrap the rest of my car to match" but there is no way i'm doing the whole thing - the bumper and fender flares would be way harder than the hood.
also, i did this after i wrapped a few random parts on my scoot green so a tiny bit of experience with 3m 1080 wrap

Took probably 15 minutes to clean it off really well and pop off the nozzles, then probably 30-45 minutes to install it. I did with 1 other persons help. Without 4 hands, it would be close to impossible. 6 would probably be better. I was ready to give up after 15 minutes of failure and a wrinkly vinyl but some heat and pulling got the wrinkles out.

I had seriously considered wrapping my 4runner, but I realized that I enjoy painting much more than wallpapering, which is essentially the DIY application difference between vinyl wrapping and plastidipping. I plastidipped this myself on my own in the garage and enjoyed it, whereas I'm sure I would have lost my mind trying to wrap the 4runner.

Coming full circle here, I noticed the wrap wasn't looking as great as it once did so I looked online and saw some horror stories of removing old/dried out vinyl. Since mine stays outside and has been in the Southern California sun for 4 years (and one week) I decided to remove it. I waited for a warm/sunny day to make the process easier. It was very painless with the 3m 1080 wrap under those conditions. A few little specks of paint got pulled up but I am certain that was due to the paint - not the wrap.

Nice to hear the 1080 comes off easily. Its about time I peel the vinyl wrap I have on the hood of my old Camry (oxidized/pitted carbon fiber hood) - it is starting to looks pretty bad at this point... Also around 4 years of outside/sun time.

Sorry for the resurrection. Just picked up a 2000 SR5 and love it so far.
The protective film on the rear fenders looks terrible. I removed on one side but in the process tore up the paint on the plastic fender pretty good. Still looks bad.
I ordered some 3M 1080 matte back wrap with the idea that I would simply wrap the area that has / had the protective tape - not the entire fender.
Anyone ever try this? Seems pretty straight forward but I haven't worked with the wrap before.
