mattress on factory roof rails?

Anyone ever do this? Good idea/bad idea? Any tips?

Going queen sized mattress shopping and if I can haul it back over the border myself from NH to Mass I'll save sales tax and delivery. I'll be on the highway for maybe 15 miles.

Yea, pretty much this. Just make sure its secured properly.

I just did this. Used two ratchet straps. Didn't have a problem at all.

Just do it like that ^^ where the box spring is on top. Place one ratchet strap as far forward as the roof rack will allow and another at the far rearward position.

You should be fine.

Given the extremely short distance you are driving I would just drive slowly... keep it under 60. Drag on the car increases rapidly: 75mph has *almost twice as much wind drag* as 55mph. Even if you have strapped the mattress down tight you could still damage it if it gets folded up by the wind.

Why don't you vote for politicians in Mass. that will lower your sales tax rate so you don't have to do that?

See post 4, although with the stuff on it maybe he was tossing it. I've seen plenty of people driving down the road with them up top or in the truck bed and no plastic. Yuck.

Done it too. Two mattresses AND a box spring. No problem. Just strap it down tight.
