Recently, I went to the Local Toyota Dealership to look into purchasing a new 4Runner or Tacoma to replace my 1998 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6 4x4. After test driving both vehicles I met with the sales person to find out what I would get in trade for my vehicle and get an out-the-door price (OTD). I didn't expect to get much for my vehicle and the number they came up with for trade-in was $3,500.00. The OTD price for the 2014 4Runner SR5 was $37,261.00 and the 2014 Tacoma was $30,723.00. I'm not saying these vehicles aren't worth it but my 98 T4R is in real good shape and has a lot of life left. In summary, I didn't feel moved to part with my 98 T4R and part with the cash to drive a new vehicle.

I am the original owner of this 1998 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6 4X4. It has 70,000 original miles.

The worst issue on the exterior is the rear bumper needs to be replaced. The rest of the body is in good shape with a few chips in the paint. I have ordered a new antenna mast to replace the mast that is frozen in the up position. The other exterior item that needs to be replaced is the rear wiper arm.

On the mechanical side I have ordered rebuilt calipers, rotors, and pads. The brakes are all original and the wear sensors on the passenger side started to squeak. The original calipers are too rusted to bother with. My rebuilt calipers arrived and look like new castings instead of used and the rotors and pads will arrive today. Other items I will be addressing are timing belt and fuel filter.

I am energized to do the appropriate upgrades to this 98 T4R to get many more miles and years out of it before succumbing to the new vehicle bug.

I found this website while doing searches on timing belt replacement. Since then, I am enjoying exploring what others have done with their T4R's and I'm learning a lot. So, thanks for all of those that have contributed.

I think they were totally trying to screw you on the trade-in offer. Nice T4R!! I am the original owner of my 1998 SR5 2WD V6. I hit 270,000 miles 2 weeks ago. Still running strong!

I was not surprised by that trade-in offer. I checked the Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds websites and the trade-in estimates were in the $4,500.00 range. If I was motivated to buy the new vehicle we would have had further negotiations.

I will be very pleased if I can run this truck up to that kind of mileage!

Well, I drove a new 4Runner yesterday and I am putting this 3rd gen up for sale. Mechanical work no longer agrees with my hands and they don't work the way they used to. No more whining, nuff said. I put a for sale add in the classified section. It's a very nice T4R.

Best of luck on your sale. I can't knock you for getting into a new 4Runner. I love the new body style, as well as the Trail Editions. Post up some pics and stats when you get your new one!
