I run a Scangauge. It's "OK" but feels a bit antiquated these days. There may be more modern OBDII readers out there. I'd check and see if Aeroforce Interceptor supports your model year 4Runner. Much nicer. I ran one in my old Challenger.

Did you run it in series or bypassed the radiator?

just the drivers. i was told i need a 2 ohm resistor to turn the light off. im trying to avoid cutting off the plug if at all possible.

You should be able to use this:

Internal Error

Just stuff the leads in the connector. Protect it from grounding out, zip tie it in place or similar, and you'll be all good.

why do you say its dated? are the readings on a scangage not accurate?

i bypassed it. no idea on mileage on radiator but its not leaking so i dont need to replace it. i want zero chance of a pink milkshake. this is the only way to eliminate it.

oh, you are talking an actual resistor, i thought you were going to link something that was more plug and play. 5 dollar shipping on a 48 cent part. ouch!

The data is accurate, it's just looks a bit out of place IMO in the interior and I think there are nicer looking more modern options available. Like I said, I have one mounted on my steering column, so it does work. I use it to track miles left on the tank, timing advance, mpg, and something else I can't remember LOL. I got it like 12 years ago and have been meaning to get something updated.

i personally like having 4 gauges in that one small space and i think this blends in better than a couple of gauges. i dont want a bunch of gauges in my interior, nor the chore of wiring them all in. im a god damn idiot when it comes to wiring so i avoid it at all costs.

LOL, fair enough. Wiring can be a PITA for sure, but I love custom gauges in a vehicle so I'm the opposite. I want it to look like a fighter cockpit LOL.

The Interceptor does just connect to the OBDII port, but you'd have to mount it someplace. It shows two PIDs (data points) at a time and you click the buttons to scroll them.

I was looking at my Scangauge this morning driving in to work and I guess it's not that bad honestly. It does kinda go with the older look of the Toyota's gauge panel. It took me a minute but I was able to get it to look green like the factory lighting as well. I mainly use it for gas mileage but have ignition advance on there so I know my meth injection is working proper.

I did one of those blue tooth OBDII readers and it was slick with the free for Android Torque app, but you do have to have a phone to see the gauges. It was handy for doing some data logs you can setup custom screens to see all kinds of stuff at a glance. I've considered putting an old cell phone in a holder and using them but may be more trouble than it's worth.

small little update:

got the sonoran steel extended rear brake line in this weekend:

the install was quick but actually kind of a pain in the ass as the fitting on the line that connects to the lower fitting sitting atop the rear axle doesnt rotate freely like i thought it did. which means you need to straighten the line and thread in a somewhat tight area (the fact that the line is extended doest help at this step). i got it done in about an hour, but i didnt jack up my rig; we just put it on some home made ramps my buddy made to get me some extra room. it was a combo of sitting on my knees and ass. not comfy for an hour, but it still a somewhat easy job just in a confined space. this line is very high quality, but the fact that the bottom fitting doesn't swivel kind of sucks. im hoping the other options have this swivel.

snap on/blue point makes a tool that clamps the flared portion of the line so you dont constantly loose fluid during the install, but i forgot to keep pestering my dad about it so i just wedged a long funnel between my rear axle and panhard bar to direct the leaking fluid to a catch pan. here is a picture of it:

part number is SLS516SO. i also found this pretty cool method which involves grinding down a golf tee and pushing it in the brake line flair:

i think the next two projects im going to tackle are installing the scan gauge and getting my steering wheel swap finalized. [MENTION=198376]4Runner4Leon[/MENTION] hooked me up with a FMU housing and i ordered the piece that adapts the scan gauge to the FMU unit. i didnt want the scan gauge near the a pillar, a top the steering column, or replacing the ash tray (the other popular options). so this option seemed like the best one for me. im not going to be looking at it 24/7 and the sun glass holder is too small for my sunglasses so this place seems the most logical for me.

I just use a vacuum cap for brake lines while swapping them, etc. No need for a fancy tool.

i can get snap on stuff basically at cost. i think the MSRP on that tool is like 18 bucks, so even cheaper for me. the vaccumm caps are a good idea though, although im assuming most dont have these on hand. although you wouldnt have golf tees on hand either unless you lived with someone who golfed.

finally got some local snow. have been busy with life and other projects outside of the 4runner. looking to hopefully order a scan gauge hopefully sooner than later and get my horn button in and the airbag light taken care of!
