Method for airing down?

What do you do to air down your tires? Do you press the valve stem with your finger nail? Is there a tool specifically for releasing tire air pressure? Or unscrew the valve stem? I have a tool to remove the valve stem but I don't like that method too much. It's tough to stop at the perfect moment.

I remove the valve core. So my faster. Of course there is the risk of losing the core, but I have spares. I just let air out just shy of where I want it, then screw the core back in.
 
Stauns

Once you set your desired low pressure, screw them on and wait for them to stop hissing. Remove them and wheel.
 
Tire deflators like staun (eBay), screw em on and drive for 10min then stop and take em off, easy as pie!
 
I've used the preset tire deflators from a few different companies, but they are not always accurate. Pain in the ass when you set them to 17 and they go down to 14. On my fat pic of a Land Cruiser that's a deal breaker.

I've been using the ARB EZ deflator tool for about 3 yrs, it is slower, but by far the best.

this is what I do.

I start putting the core back in 1-2 lbs above what im going for.


ive considered getting a set of stauns, just for the convenience.
 
For automatic deflators, Stauns. Why? (1) Because deflators need a certain amount of pressure differential between initial and target pressure to get started. Typically, a target pressure that is half or less of the starting pressure is needed for a reliable start. Stauns have an optional manual pull start. (2) They require no external tool for adjustment

How to use? Mine are set low (14psi). If I don't want to air down that much it's a simple matter to time the procedure to get the desired pressure.

If I happen to want 25psi, looking at a timer isn't even necessary. Just walking around the vehicle installing/removing the deflators accomplishes that when starting from the normal 36 street psi. The manual pull start is crucial in that situation.

Are they consistent with the setting you put them at? I mean, once I get them adjusted to 18 PSI (or whatever) do they reliably air down to that pressure each time, or is it sometimes 16, sometimes 20?

Is it ok to drive, a little, with them on? Could I stop a mile before the trail, install them, and drive up to the trail with them on? Is there a risk of damage or inconsistent results when doing that?

While the ARB pressure gauge looks good, it still means going around and sitting at each tire for a few minutes.
 
Tire gauge. Just press on the stem and let it out. :shrug:
that takes way too long.

I'll plan on showing up half an hour late then. That takes forever.

yes, they are meant to be used that way.

also, pulling the cores, its not 5 minutes each, I bet its not 5 minutes total.

Trailheads, here. I keep them set for 18 PSI, and if I need to go lower I pop the valve cores.
interesting. id never heard of those.
 
The ARB EZ Deflator gets my vote too. It pulls the valve core but does it in a way that makes it essentially impossible to lose or damage. Yes, you still have to do each tire one at a time, but it makes quick work of deflating my 32s.

Consistent enough for me. Normally within 1 lb of setting, occasionally exceeding that. I have trailhead deflators also and haven't found their consistency to be any better.

The Trailhead deflators say you can drive slowly with them on. My guess is they say that because they need some selling point. Stauns don't recommend that, but I'd also guess the Stauns would perform just as well under those circumstances but that Staun has the good sense to recommend against it. Never tried it. Wouldn't want to risk catching a deflator on something and tearing the valve off, but even in that respect the Stauns might be better suited since they're much shorter than the Trailheads.

I certainly would not go wheeling up a trail with the deflators on, but just driving down the dirt road to the trail should not be any issue.
 
If I'm alone, I put on my Trailheads as soon as I hit dirt. There's almost always a couple minutes between trail head or parking lot and the first obstacle. I wouldn't leave them on anywhere they could get snagged and tear out the valve stem though.

When I'm with a crew, there's always somebody with an ARB deflator anyway, so the automatic deflators give me time to BS while we wait. :D
 
I just pull the cores. You can use the stem caps that have the tool on it or just by the tool. About 4 or 5 bucks. Doesn't take as long. I carry spare cores..
