Michelin LTX M/S2 v Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza Plus

A few old threads on search, but they were mostly from the time Alenza+ were really new....

Which is the better tire overall? I'm looking for anecdotal experience.

I drive 18-20k mi per year, mostly highway and in the city--some dirt road stuff and sand, but almost entirely on-road.

They both seem awesome and have good reviews--and can be had for similar prices.

Thoughts?

Unless someone has had both tires you're just going to get one sided comparisons.

That said, the Michelins wear like iron. My 97 F350 eats tires and the Michelins lasted 2x as long as any other tire it had ever had on it. I went to the LTX A/T2 after the M/S2's were worn out just for a more aggressive tread pattern.

LTX gets my vote. I've had a small history of experience with the bridgestone's, but years, and 100's of thousands of miles on numerous vehicles wearing the LTX line.

Currently have LTX A/T2s on my 100 series, and they are phenomenal. 60k warranty on an A/T tire with this ride quality is incredible.

Have LTX M/S2s that the PO installed in 2010. Still have 5/32 of tread all around. Debating about the low-rolling-resistance options on Tire Rack - Michelin and Continental make good options. Hear mpgs improve and no change in handling.

285/75/16 ltx at2s on my 100 series. The ride is incredible, but keep in mind the massive size/weight differences between the two trucks. The 285 is E range. I'd like the same set on my 3rd gen but would have to get used to a stiffer sidewall.

So my longtime tire shop quoted me for MS2s that are backordered/being phased out. Offered me the new Defender LTX MS for the same price, which were 20-30more on tirerack and at costco.

Supposedly formulated for 10% more tread life.

Having them put on Fri. Thanks for the advice.

not to throw a wrench into your plans or anything, but I have heard from a few folks that the costco Defender LTX is nothing like the normal LTX line Michelin sells elsewhere. I'd be interested to hear your opinions once you get them broken in.

They aren't available just at costco--this is from an independent shop.

They are billed here as the successor to the M/S2.

Obviously all that remains to be seen, but everything I've read is pretty compelling.

Besides, they'll have to ride better than my dry rotting Michelin Latitude Tours.

I take it the IAC cleaning cured the high idle for good?

Yeah it was a low-idle/stall on a really hot day. Haven't had a recurrence yet.

I'll post some pics when I get em mounted Friday.

Wow, more life than the MS2's and same tread design? The ones I have are wearing even better that the Michelin Cross-Terrains they replaced which I ran 85k (a little too long); I've got a good 3/8"+ left after 45,000 miles. Both were hands down better than the POS Goodyear Wrangler R/T's that were OE on the truck. They were toast at 50k YAYYYY!. I was happy to get rid of them. Those craploads would hydroplane in a spilled latte at 20mph. Water does not bother the Michelins nearly as much.

The only difference I can see is a minor reduction in load rating, from 112T to 111T, which is from 2469 to 2403 lbs./tire. I'd sign up for that.

Did your shop beat Costco's mounted and balanced price? Because that is tough to do. They only charge like $15.

Nothing lasts as long as Michelin. Worth every penny. My only complaint is that they keep changing models faster than I can wear them out. I never get to buy the same tire twice.

I'm going through Gerald's (local tire chain, high ratings). Quotes me 175/tire with 12/tire for mounting/balancing/etc.. Costco was much higher for the same tire--but they were waaay cheaper on the Alenzas.

Geralds offers free lifetime rotation/balancing/repair too like Costco, and there's one closer to my house.

I think after taxes and rebates come back in I'll be paying 40$ more (total) for the better overall tire.

There's a great deal on them locally as well....wonder what everyone thinks?

They seem to review comparably to Defender LTX on tirerack.com.

Good tire for the soccer mom and on the highway, I have used them on other autos with no problems except that once the tread starts wearing it seems to accelerate pretty quickly.

But the LTX IMHO is head and shoulders above them.

You can't miss the bright orange building....

The LTX A/T2 are good tires, especially for lots of highway driving. They tend to fill up with our Missouri clay pretty quickly, and then become rather useless...but that's an AT tire for ya.

LTX M/S2's for sure! It was like getting a whole new suspension after putting those on. Remember, this tire uses all one piece of rubber, whereas the other tires is multiple pieces glued together inside, which makes for rougher ride!

Correct! Also, this tire in the same size as any other has a wider sidewall, by at least a half and inch, which also acts as a shock and soaks up bumps more.
