There was a TSB for the front differential that probably was done. Not a big deal really.

As for the Emissions test you got me there. I would say maybe the previous owner installed an intake, which would cause it to fail for a visual test.

Worth checking it out though. Just find out why it failed the test.

Those are my thoughts. And get the price down for sure!!!!

That price for 10K miles in Ventura is no real bargain IMO. Since you're from Orange County you might want to first see what you could buy a new '13 Trail for. It's entirely possible a dealer might give you a heck of a price to get rid of old stock.

By the time you factor in 10,000 less miles when you sell and a full 3 years on the warranty for you, that could make make a big difference. Not to mention if you're financing the interest rate for a new vs. used car is almost always better, and Toyota Financial gives some terrific deals for new stock.

A super loaded Black Trail that has the wireless headphone back seat entertainment set up and the cool pseudo beadlock TRD wheels, at Auto Nation Toyota in Irvine. It lists at $43,135. and they're advertising for $38,520. (my guess is they'll come off that price too).

A 2013 Toyota 4Runner in Irvine CA dealer AutoNation Toyota Irvine. Black 4WD 4dr V6 Trail (Natl) 4 Dr. Wagon.

Lastly a new '13 Trail at Thousand Oaks Toyota which they strangely don't list the color on. Sticker is a little higher, so it going to be just a little more highly equipped than the red or blue Trail are.

It's a CPO, you get 12k/12month bumper to bumper and 7yr/100k powertrain warranty - I wouldn't worry too much. Besides doesn't CA have very strict emission standards? Any aftermarket parts may have caused the failed emissions test..
 
^^ What he said.. 1 yr 12k miles bumper to bumper and 7yr from original purchase date and up to 100k power-train warranty should take care of you.. i don't think you have anything to worry about with the differential.. but i can't understand what would make it fail emissions unless maybe it was a loose gas cap?

Unless I'm very mistaken the 4Runner is manufactured only one way from an emissions standpoint. Yes California's standards are higher than many other states. However that's irrelevant since the Trail you buy in Cleveland has the exact same emissions equipment and standards as the one purchased in LA.

I'm not sure that's what Dave was trying to say.

Though the 4Runner may be built the same for all US distribution (emission wise), it's possible to have an aftermarket component cause an issue and result in a failing emissions test in a state that tests with stricter tolerances.

A somewhat hypothetical example of this would be here in VA. Only a handful of counties in northern VA test for emissions (not hypothetical). I could have a CAI with an oiled filter throw a CEL with a code relating to the MAF or O2 sensor or something (hypothetical). In Arlington County, this would result in a failed emission test that could show up on the Carfax (you're required to do an emissions test every two years). In the city of Richmond, they don't test for emissions, therefore having that issue would be irrelevant (and invisible to Carfax). Replace the CAI situation with an aftermarket locking gas cap or something else and the story would be the same.

Based on OP's location, he's subject to California's smog testing (which I'm not at all familiar with). If it were me, I would want to know why it failed; then use that information to decide whether or not it would lead to an expensive fix down the road.

Omar they don't test new car purchases for smog in California. You typically own a vehicle for some years before getting a smog test requirement with your registration renewal. I recently sold a 2009 T4R and my wife has a 2010 Venza. Neither had any smog test. The exception is buying a new vehicle from another state...even if you got it a mile across the border and stoppled at the first DMV on the CA side.

I assume the dealer was required to do a smog check on this resale...regardless of model year or miles. However I still think the OP would be well served to step up and buy new, and he's got a chance to pick up a real special car at a bargain price near his home.

That being said should this rig come back into play I agree he should investigate further about any smog test fail, since that's very unusual for such a little used vehicle.

Thanks for the knowledge! I had no idea that's how it worked there (now I'll end up on CA's DMV site for awhile reading about it - curiosity kills me).

I agree though, this should be a no brainer on a new 2013.
