Might be getting a NEW 4 runner what to look for??

Hey there, Im new to the 4runner scene I have never owned a toyota before and am looking to get something that can keep up with a jeep without paying the price of a jeep + lift + tires etc... The 4runner seemed to be a viable solution, but I wanted to get some info from the people who drive them. Im from the Chicago Area and Rust is a big issue here. How bad do these rust? Im looking more at the 2nd Gen's because they are plentiful and cheap. And are there any mechanical problems I should look out for with these like bearings,tie rods, shocks etc.. Also, The CV Joints, I want to put a 4" lift on it with 33" MudTerrains, how many problems have you had with this set up. And ( this is a long shot) If there are people from my area who have been to the Cliffs Insane Terrain or The badlands with their 4runners let me know how they did and what trails they went on.

If you are set on a 2nd gen, I would find one with a 5-speed. The auto kills power.

Potential problem areas

Here's what seems to come up most often:

V6 engines tend to blow head gaskets. Toyota has a recall but will only replace it once.

4 cyl engines are preferred for reliability and most common problem is with the timing chain if it is replaced with the cheap parts store timing kits. If you get a good quality timing kit it should be good for 100000+ miles. See engnbldr.com or lcengineering.com

The tailgate windows often have problems.

The rear end always sags because of the wet-noodle coil springs that came stock.

In addition to the above

Rust is a big problem, especially frame rust. Check it thoroughly.
With 4" lift, the CV joint boots can wear out quicker, just keep an eye on them so dirt doesn't get in.

But don't let all that seem too negative, having owned Jeeps and Toys, I prefer Toys more.
