mikebontoft's BMW 2002 build thread!

Just brought it home today! Hoping to sell another car that I just don't have much desire to work on... anyway, it's not without some rusty spots and the engine ran like absolute crap when I bought it.

4Runner did great once again keeping up with traffic driving to and from Provo with the trailer and car!

It also came with some bumpers, so I tried them on. Safe to say it WILL NOT be getting them back.

1975 2002, 4 speed manual 2.0 M10 Carbed. 150K miles. After performing a valve adjustment and new spark plugs, it runs great. Smokes a lot, mostly from burning off the oil leaks. Probably also from the PO driving it with a bad misfire due to maladjusted valves. OR I may just have to tear it down and do a rebuild, or upgrade the engine. The clutch is also going out on it, unfortunately.

Seats are in great condition, well the front ones anyway. BUT I really think I'm going to swap them with the SVT Focus seats I have in, well, my focus. I hate vinyl seats. They suck. But they're perfect so I can sell them.

Current plans are to fix the rust and work on piecing together the body kit. Fender flares, front (turbo style) bumper, euro rear bumper. Possibly quad headlights if I can find them. Also thinking about using my 15" Merkur XR4ti basketweave (BBS) wheels and some wheel adapters to fit them. And mudflaps.

Essentially, turn it into this:

here is s very crappy photo of the seats I'd like to fit into it. very comfy... if I really wanted, I could wire up the seat heaters!

ALSO, I'm trying to figure out the best way to go ITBs and fuel injection on it. the Megasquirt I have for the focus is not sufficient for a twin turbo V8 IMO.

I have an already assembled and working MS1 Extra and a harness. GSXR ITBs are on eBay for around $100. I should be able to program most of my stock sensors (will need to grab an IAT sensor though) to be used with the ms.

I'll have to fab up an intake manifold flange to run a short section of tube to couple the ITBs to it, then some more tube to make a 90* bend over the ITBs for some extra runner length. probably just run 4 clamp on air filters.

I've got a parts 944 in the shop waiting to be hauled off. It's got a larger magnaflow exhaust on it and I will take the external fuel pump and maybe the fuel hard lines off of it just for ease.

Not sure about the best place for the map sensor signal

edit:

Here's the only video I have of it right now. Obviously smokey. If it turns out to be rings, we will go on an awesome journey of a high compression, high RPM, ITB megasquirted motor. :)

If it's just valve seals or something... well the only difference in that build is the compression. I know it sounds like crap, but the muffler is sitting in the trunk. I guess it fell off the hanger and he cut it off. You can see my other leaks in the video too. haha.

Sweet!! I love a good classic project. This thing has tons of potential. Such low mileage too. Got any pics of the XR4ti wheels?

I like your seat swap idea. Subscribed to watch the build unfold.

Someday you have to get a pic with all 4 of your cars.

Yeah. I may or may not get rid of the Mazda though... there's just not much desire for it.

Alright, I've spent the day giving it a proper inspection. I've got good, bad, and ugly to post. Large post alert!

The good!
wheels should look good once I clean them up, repaint and have some tires installed. I can't truly test fit because these are 4x108 and the BMW is 4x100. 1" Wheel adapter should be perfect fitted with some 205/50R15 tires. (note the second picture is not mounted either... just tried to give it that effect)

The bad.
Documented all my rust. everything. looks bad when you look at all these photos in a row.

Part of the front nose and left fender

hole in the driver's door. I'll probably just go find myself a cleaner door.

Front left fender

More left fender and top of the front clip as well. Fender replacement will be the best course of action. I should be able to cut and weld a new corner piece for the clip.

Bit of rust under the rear bumper. Shouldn't be too bad.

Little bubbling around the rear fender. No doubt there's a little rust there.

And... the ugly. It looks bad, but fortunately the rocker rust is only contained to the OUTER panels. Those of which are available as $120 replacements. The structural bits are fine.
Passenger side is the worst. MIGHT be lucky enough to repair the driver's side.

And the absolute worst. The part that makes me nervous for now... The passenger side floorboard. It's rotted. It's soft. I won't know just how big the spot is until I pull the carpet out, which will be one of my next tasks. I think I'll be OK though if I can cut it out and weld in some new metal.

And just a good overall underbody shot. There's some rusted through spots on the front nose at the bottom too. I'm thinking of just cutting some rectangular holes to get rid of the extra rust. Besides, the front valence covers that all up.

Oh yeah, and I'm having carb issues. Doing some research, somewhere along the way someone installed an aftermarket Weber 32/36. The problem is when I first cold-start it, well, it doesn't start. It floods the engine bad enough that I wash the rings and end up with 50psi compression results. I'm finding a lot of half-assed repairs on this thing now. Smog pump is disabled, EGR disabled, vacuum advance on the distributor is disabled. Consider everything a mess.

But yeah, so it will idle like absolute crap, and when I try to rev it the thing bogs down. But it floods on cold start. After running for awhile, it seems to run better again. Turning the mixture screw out allows it to run better. According to Weber, this is supposed to add MORE fuel. I don't get it either, because the other day it ran awesome after I did a valve adjustment and new plugs. Went to crank it today and it ran just like it did before.

Oh I haven't updated for awhile I see. Not much but not sure where I left off. I'll have to log in at work sometime to get it up to date.
