I just filled up again and I'm "up to" 16.42 mpg. Granny driving, no long warm-ups, tires at 34, nothing over 60mph.

This is about what I got in cold weather (sub 10F) in my Dodge Dakota V6, so I'm not terribly upset. I suspect I'll be able to get at least 20mpg highway in the warmer weather. God I hope so!

The good thing for me is, I don't drive this thing every day. Some weekdays and some weekends...probably 10 days out of the month.

Yeah, that's unfortunate. Keep the hood and roof waxed nicely, and you can get 1mpg extra! :bigok:

Or, make the next MatthewStarr special, and build a sweet fiberglass cone to attach to the rear end. Kill drag, baby! No offense, MS...just playin around.
 
It's actually the same year...1999.

It just seems like the 3.4 could be more fuel efficient. It doesn't seem underpowered for the weight of the truck, but somehow it must be working hard enough to burn through the fuel.
 
I'm happy if I ever see over 20 MPG on the highway. Earlier this year I made a trip from Northern Indiana to Northern Virginia and the best I achieved was a little over 20 MPG. This is with lots of cruise, no A/C. Pretty flat if you've ever driven through that area, and only gets interesting (mountainous) when you get near the WV border.

Lately, I'll get 220-240 miles on 16 gallons on average. It's just the cold weather and the winter grade gasoline
 
Wow you guys that are making in the 20's that's great. I've had mine for about a month and I'm not anywhere near that, my avg have been down in the 16 to 16.5 range :( I thought it would do better.
 
OK well i just took a trip up to ventura county so see my gf and I drove 250 miles with about 70 being surface streets and the rest all highway. I got 22.6mpg on the way up there.

I topped off the tank before I came back home so i could see what I got driving strictly freeway on the way home and now i've got to go fill 'er up before I head off to school so i'll let you know what I got on the return trip once I get back home...
 
i normally drive short trips but took my son to Monster Jam friday night in Columbia, SC - 220 mile round trip i got 17 mpg. Im happy with that considering i drove 70+ most of the time
 
OK so i just filled up the tank and I drove 196.7 miles on 7.901 gallons giving me 24.9 mpg. Not too shabby for a V6 auto. That was doing about 72 mph the whole way home.

So, what could possibly be THAT different from one 4runner to the next? Sure the 4x4 adds some weight, but not enough to make the 6-8mpg difference.

What tires and size are you rolling, Bretski?

Synthetic oil? Air/exhaust? Super secret golf-ball-like dimpled exterior surface? :cool:

haha, not golf ball exterior but rather feathers from a falcon to help slice through the wind. lol.

no but i roll on the all mighty 225/75r15 and i think they are like Pathfinder or something like that. I believe they are just the standard factory size tires. Oil wise its Penzoil 10w30. No exhaust yet (although a Vortex muffler is looking really nice with my bday right around the corner. lol)

I drove with cruise control honestly like 180 of the nearly 200 miles but idk how big of a factor that should be. I coast way more than i brake and stuff but its just a stock SR5 2wd auto that thankfully is getting me great gas mileage.

And the grade pretty much equaled itself out by me going downhill about as much as I did going up.

I think 2WD along with your smaller tire size really helps you out. Cruise control can't hurt either.

I've actually found that to be the opposite, when driving on I-70 I get worse gas mileage using cruise control because of all the hills... I begin to lose speed so the cruise control puts the pedal to the floor to try and compensate. It typically over compensates leaving my speed well above what it was set at. But that's just my experience!
 
My experience with cruise control so far has been really good. But I can see how it wouldnt be so beneficial while going up and down hills and all that. I think my car only shifted down in to 3rd gear like maybe 3 or 4 times the whole way home so all i really had to worry about was staying awake and in my lane. lol. but i def think that having skinnier tires help because there's just that much less tire your engine needs to get moving and keep moving while your driving.
 
guys, im only getting about 220 per tank... i dont have THAT heavy of a foot.... could a sensor be malfunctioning? whats goin on??

I just did a trip across PA on 80. I got 20.7 mpg on the whole trip, about 1300 miles.

I have a 2000 Limited 4X4, 3.4 v6. Mobil 1 0W30 oil, and synthetic tranny, and diff oil.

I have also purchased a scangaugeII and it is pretty cool to play with while on the trip.

I have been hearing about covalizer to throw in your gas to make it burn better. Anyone hear of this?

Now that's what I'm talkin' about! I'd be really happy with 20.7 (even mostly highway).

The 0W30 will seem quite thin in the summer, but probably fine in the winter. Do you switch to 5W30 or 10W30 in the summer? Or, whatever the synthetic equivalents are?

I love the digital meter on my VW...so I think I'll be getting a scangauge too. Thanks for the tips.
