Misfire after changing plugs and wires

Okay so I just got done changing plugs and wires and I have a major misfire with horrible idle and slight backfire. I checked all connections about 10 times. I do have a check engine light on but I don't have a reader. I put all the old plugs back in and old wires back on and it's still misfires. I'm now thinking one of the boots are bad. I'm pretty sure it's not gonna be a coil pack because it was running perfect without a single issue before I changed plugs and wires. Any ideas?? I'm going to change the boots tomorrow first and see if that works, if not, i'll buy 1 new coil and switch them till it runs normal to see which pack it is.

Are you sure you routed the wires correctly after you changed the plugs and wires? I doubt the coil went bad while changing plugs and wires. And I doubt it's a boot.

have you been able to get a CEL yet? If it will identify which cylinder is misfiring, swap coils and see if the code moves to that cylinder.

Wires should be:
Cylinder 1 to Cylinder 4,
Cylinder 3 to Cylinder 6,
Cylinder 5 to Cylinder 2.

I agree that it sounds like you mixed up the boots when plugging them into the spark plugs.

did the same thing with my 2000 tacoma. frustaited the hell out of me. turned into a 6 hour job and 2 buddies and a 30 pack to figure it out. i felt like a dumbass

Im going to assume the 30 pack is why it took 6 hours

Just remember the difference between the paired cylinders is always 3.

1 and 4
3 and 6
5 and 2

Makes it real simple.

No shame in it, it's easy to do. Glad you got it sorted out. Is it running right again now?

Yes it's running excellent now. I just got it about 3 weeks ago. it's a 98 Limited 4wd with 150k on it. Got a wonderful deal but it also has been severely neglected. What I mean by that is, it's clear the tranny fluid has never been changed in most of it's life, no diff fluid has ever been changed, most routine maintenance seems to have also been neglected but dispite all of it, I am on the path to getting this thing back to excellent condition. Cosmetically it has been well taken care of but as far as suspension, fluid change, belts, most else has been quite neglected and I'm now creating quite a long laundry list of things to do ensure this thing sees AT LEAST 300k
