Missing on Start-Up

we are actually doing the process of elimination. even if you bring it to the dealer, they'll do the same thing or worse recommend the wrong solution as a easy way out. parts that I think may cause a misfire are: fuel injector, head gasket leak, spark plug, ignition coil and maybe the wiring connector just needs cleaning. looks like he already eliminated the ignition coil by replacing it. next would be to swap the fuel injectors to different cylinder and see if the error code follows and if not, we can assume it's the head gasket and proceed from there such as taking it to the dealer to have the head gasket replaced. as he mentioned, the coolant level is still showing the same which I think is not the gasket. to the OP, keep us posted. I'm interested to find out.

OP - this has been going on for a year according to your first post... If you had spent the money to have the HG checked than I'd say keep tossing money at fuel injection related repairs. However, you keep spending money on everything but the $100 or so to find out for sure whether or not you have a serious issue. Hope in one hand and shit in the other, tell me which fills up first. Spend the money to have the issue checked, if it's not leaking, great. Figure out the cause of your issue however you or your mechanic sees fit but what sense does it make to spend money on something you have been chasing for over a year with no results. Obviously talking common sense to you have no effect as you refuse to listen to sound advice and it's your money so why bother asking us? As far as your question about your coolant level... your mechanic probably tops it off when you bring it in or it's not leaking bad enough yet to see a measurable loss in the overflow container. I'm sure it doesn't take much to make a motor stumble on a cold start for 10 seconds or so.

These are quotes from your first post:

"I am trying to convince myself it is not a head gasket " Obviously...

"Hate to have the dealer replace head gasket and that not be the problem" Why would you replace it without having it checked first? Because you refuse to listen?

I wouldn't assume anything. The process of elimination is expensive and should only be applied if you have absolutly no ideas. The Dealer wanted to check for a blown head gasket in the first post. The OP either is in denial or he likes throwing his money away.

To Radlynx, thank you for your reasoned analysis of the current situation .

To Hearno. It's been my experience that if a thread goes on long enough, eventually someone is going to start making personal remarks . If you would take time to re-read the posts , you will find that I did not say it had been going on for a year . I said it started almost a year ago , then went away for ten months only to return recently . I also explained why I have not gone back to have the head gasket checked before following other solutions on my own, i.e. mistrust of dealer .
It's my understanding , that forums serve the purpose to ask questions and exchange information . With the notable exception of one , all posters have been polite and generously offered advice . Some have asked to be kept informed of events and that is why I have continued to post any new information . If these developments no longer interest you , I believe you will find an "unsubscribe" button somewhere .

To Claydoctor----If you ask for advice on a public forum you have to be able to put up with all the answers. I mean 44 posts already and you still wont listen to members who have already been through this HG thing. Not sure what you're looking for, but it's not good advice.

don't take it personally Calimander! what matters most is what fixed the issue. suggestions are good but in the end it's the OP who decides. I do the same thing, I ask for advice but still decide on my own in the end. don't tell me if someone tries to tell you to jump off a bridge without a parachute, you'll do it. of course, you'll decide from there if that's safe or not. that's the same thing here. but peace man, just saying my thoughts. Good job to all for sharing! :cheer2::cheer2:

Willing to bet it is the HG unfortunately.

I just discovered that both my 04 and my Dad's 05 both have the dreaded HG symptoms. Both just shy of 130k one owner vehicles. That's what I get for bragging about what a good vehicle my 4runner has been.

Stop it ! You're making me depressed !

thank goodness. I'm at 95000 miles. I have 4 more years to reach that. LOL!

Final Verdict : Head gasket blown cylinder #6 . For the past two weeks, it has been hard getting heat in the car . Also yesterday noticed temp gauge acting erratically .
Dropped it off at dealer and got the word this morning . What really chapped me was being told I only have about 10% left on front brakes . First set went 150K and now these , which were replaced by dealer presumably with Toyota parts are shot after 45K . That doesn't sound right , particularly since most of that 45K was highway .

Thanks for the info. At that mileage, maybe it's just about time to replace that gasket. Are you having them replace just the driver side or both? how much does it cost at the dealer?

By the way, ask them in writing that if after they replaced the gasket, the problem persists, they have to repair it out of their pocket, not yours. Get them to sign a warranty work so you have something.

Both sides . They quoted $3K unless heads are warped then a few hundred more .

I don't think the head is warped not unless it overheated. For as long as you have a written agreement with them about the warranty work, that's probably just fair. you can call other dealers or local shops and check how much it is from their shops. that is if you want to save a few hundred dolalrs more.
