Moab Trip (May 15-18)

Looking forward to the Hell's Revenge video. I saw it for the first time last year and it's super intimidating when you stand at the bottom of it and look up.
 
What a great time! Thanks for the Moab tour:) As far as bumper dragging, yes, my hitch took the brunt of the impact and the front got one small scratch, and I pushed it in my opinion and didn't take the easiest lines following these 2. I will get some more pics up in time. The traction is amazing. Ran no locker just atrac and it did anything I asked. Would a rear locker be nice? Of course, but not mandatory to do these trails.

All in all I ended up with some scrapes to my rear bumper, skids, lower links, and sliders. All items that were purchased to protect the rig and they can all look nearly new with a little touch up paint:D

I did end up with a few pinstripes on the paint but, meh, now she's got some character. I was able to convince my wife throughout the trip that our beloved $40k rig was not getting abused..............too bad.
 
I am sure [MENTION=111073]stickw[/MENTION] (Nick) will post up once he is home, but he took some amazing pics. The nice quality pics you see are definitely his since all mine were captured with an iphone:D

Nick did a great job in his 4th Gen. Love meeting other great Toyota enthusiasts. Was neat to be able to meet with someone who lives half way across the U.S. from me.
 
Ya know, I'd told myself that I wasn't going to try Hell's Gate next week...now I'm second guessing that. Only if I can find someone who knows the exact lines to spot me on, but still...that looks like a BLAST!

Yea, I was lucky enough to learn from my buddy's line. We initially kept him high on the passenger side wall the entire way. That caused his driver's rear tire to slide into the v notch and his right front went sky high.

We determined the best way is to stay high on the passenger side wall until you get to that last hump. Just before the last hump, you can see me do a sort of "s" turn to get my rear off of the passenger side wall as much as possible, then square up to the hump.

Maybe I shouldn't post the 80 series mishap. I know I had some serious doubts after watching his initial line. But, I figured I was there and I had made it a goal of mine to do it. Definitely make sure you have your line studied and a good spotter to keep you on that line.

Nick sent me this pic and we had to laugh about it. This was the end result of my buddy's initial Hells Gate run. I am standing there pretty nonchalant as if I am actually helping his vehicle from rolling, haha. We were able hook him with a winch line to get the nose down. Things could have been way worse. But, everyone went home safe and we learned from it.

He could of just went back gently and took a slightly different line like WarnerD9 did. :P

The spot where your passenger tire went up in the air on the Gate is where most folks have a problem (usually the spotter's fault). You had the right line when you swung away from the wall but the ideal way to finish it is to head back up the wall from where you were initially and then turn driver as you go up it. That keeps the passenger tire from going up into the air (usually winds up keeping all the tires on the ground). If you don't make it all the way to the wall and go up the ledge to the right of where you did (as you're looking up), the driver side tire usually comes way up in the air. As I mentioned, going up the wall initially at that spot and then making your turn away from it resolves the problem.

Yea, we tried that first but the front kept lifting. We threw a winch line on him and to keep tension, then backed him down. After he situated, we kept the line on him just in case.

Yea, I almost got off of it since the front end kept rising. Just as I was about to let up, I felt the front coming down so I knew I was fine. I agree, I could have turned back up the wall a little more to keep that right front planted. But then the video wouldn't be as good��

haha. Jason was a serious sales person convincing his wife. I think the 6th try was the one. Then to see the cruiser in the precarious situation it was and time to get that figured out, then go do it in his. Courage..... I have a ton of great pics the hardest part will be narrowing down. Give me a couple days.

Haha, yea, that was the hardest part of the trip is convincing her that our baby was going to be okay. It was a great trip and I'm glad we got to hook up. Look forward to seeing your pics.

Impressive! I have been lucky enough to do that run with Moab legend Dan Mick several times and its a rush in someone else rig as a passenger. To chicken to do it myself!
 
ive found my wife has more confidence in my 4runner and my driving than I do. But then, I'm a chicken.

Really for my truck, the driver is the limiting factor at this point...
