Mobil 1 Gear Oil = Goodness

I changed the gear oil in my front, center, and rear diffs this last weekend with Mobil 1 synthetic 75W-90 as part of my 30k maintenance. Even though the maintenance schedule didn't call for the gear oil to be changed yet, I wanted piece of mind with a full synthetic gear oil in there. After changing it, I'm glad I decided to do it when I did. The front and rear diff oil was very cloudy with a good amount of gook on the the drain plug magnets. The center diff oil just looked like slightly used motor oil, which was a little strange when comparing it to the front and rear diffs.

One benefit I have already noticed with running the Mobil 1 is that I get little to no binding now when I make sharp turns (i.e. pulling in and out of parking spots, flipping U-turns, etc.). I have the V8 so I have full-time 4-wheel drive. I noticed I used to get a hint of binding before when making tight turns but not anymore. I experienced the same thing on my old full-time 4x4 Jeep GC and I know it is normal on drive pavement to experience that a little. From what I can tell, it is completely gone now.

damn, I wish I could locate some of that precious fluid locally. Best closest synth gear lube I see on shelves in stores is a Castrol. NAPA sells Amsoil for $14.99/liter :awais: Thats it

Wow, my experience was that Mobil 1 was the most readily available. Just about ever auto parts store in town around here has Mobil 1. I was looking into the Amsoil Severe Gear but it's not as easy to come by, plus, I've been pleased running Mobil 1 5W-30 in my engine for quite a while now.

The Mobil 1 75W-90 was about $8 per quart. They also make a 75W-140 that is about $15 per quart but since I don't tow I thought it would be a little extreme for my needs.

Mobil (Exxon) is Esso here. I also can't find it on the shelf but you can get it at Esso garages or oil change shops. The best deal I got was at an Esso lube wholesaler (they also sell home heating oil, industrial lubes, etc...) Buy it by the case and you should get a good deal.

sad but true Braking my back here getting oil from underground but cannot find darn Mobil 1 gear oil in local stores. Was at Canadian Tire, NAPA, Bumper-to-Bumper, Auto Value and Advanced Auto Parts last night. They have other stuff but noone sells Mobil 1 :bash:
Since I planning on switching to Mobil 1 5-30 for engine next oil change was thinking to use same brand for TC & diffs. If I dont find it in Wal-Mart I will use Amsoil which is perhaps even better choice as some say.

I went from Lucas oil to Amsoil Sever Gear. I have been very happy so far.

The M1 sold at the local flaps is good, but M1 SHC which is now called Mobil Delvac Synthetic Gear Oil 75W-90 or 80W-140 is far superior.

It is not generally available except at hd equipment or over the the road truck shops.

Would Toyota say anything under warranty if you don't use 80/90W like it calls for? I know there is no difference I ran this in my last 4 runner with no issues but I also know they are getting more strict about saving records and all that I am wondering if they would try to void a warranty over that. I am asking this because I would like to switch over again in my new 4 runner.
