Mod to Disable ABS/VSC to Have CEL go Off

Good evening folks. Question:

I have code P0500 which is more than likely my ABS module. This code is throwing my cel on and I am unable to get the 4Runner smogged. Will the "disable ABS/VSC" mod enable it so that the cel will not return?

Sorry you out of luck on that line of thinking. What year do you have?
Could be a speed sensor, wires going to it, do some troubleshooting.

I had a code P0500 a few days ago and had to replace the gauge cluster PCB.

Is your ABS light on? Are you throwing codes? Does your speedometer work?

My ABS is wonky and i pulled the fuse a while back until i have time to address it.
Never had a CEL about it, only ABS light and passed inspection in Texas that way

I had the whole speedo not working, constant ABS light from the time i got the rig running but one day i was working on suspension and cleaned the ABS sensors. the next time i disconnected and reconnected the battery the ABS light went off afterwards, the speedo started working and ABS was trying to work but would grab in the middle of light braking for no reason.

might try tracing the wiring from the sensors as stated above and if you dont have an actual CEL you might be fine but if so, good luck.

Than you guys for replying. I do have a CEL that the P0500 is throwing. I was wondering, if I bypass the ABS by performing the mod as some have described here, would it still trigger the CEL to illuminate? Maybe just pull the ABS fuse? It is a 2001 2WD Limited.

I'm not sure about the 2001 but on my 98 you could jumper terminals in the diagnostic port box and see what codes the ABS module is giving you.

You didn't answer my questions though, is your speedometer still working? If so then you can conclude the ABS module is giving out an output for speed still.

Is your ABS light on? It seems so. So pull the ABS codes!

Fix it right the first time and be done with it.

I bought my 01 with a bad Trac VSC ABS module, you don't have all symptoms of a bad module though it could be.
You could try pulling the fuse do a OBDII read see what shows. I bet that smog test would show ABS inoperative,
no experience with smog tests so not sure how thorough test is.

You can disable the ABS, but you'll also have to disable your TRAC & VSC at the same time. [MENTION=122940]ramonortiz55[/MENTION] did a write up on disabling the ABS on the 2000-2002, and here's his link. Your TRAC & VSC being disabled is a nice thing to have in some situations. Testing your 3 sensors is pretty easy to do with an OHM reader as well.

ABS light is on along with the “Christmas Tree” effect. Code is P0500. Speedo doesn’t work.

No worries just wanted to help you get to the bottom of this. Just so you know when the ABS light is on, the ABS module is throwing codes that you can look up (these are not related to the check engine light).

It does sound like you have a bad module as 96 RedRunner mentioned. Easy to replace and you can probably find one on ebay. Pull the trim near the passenger side door to locate the module and get the part number. But I'd still pull the ABS codes. It is highly unlikely that 3 of 4 ABS speed sensors have gone bad though.

From my intitial research, the bad ABS model will illuminate the CEL. I attempted to pull the ABS codes via my scanner with ABS capabilities, but it stated that for some reason, they could not be read. There are a few modules on eBay for under $200. That may be the route I take.

Make sure you get the right part #, they are not the same throughout all years. Hence why I suggest you pull the plastics off and make sure you get the right part #.

For pulling ABS codes open up the hood and find the little diagnostic black box. Take a small portion of wire and jumper between TC & E1. Once the jumper is pushed in you should see the ABS light flash. The ABS should flash in some sort of pattern indicating the trouble code.

EXAMPLE:
FLASH-FLASH-FLASH- BRIEF PAUSE-FLASH-FLASH-FLASH-FLASH (repeat)

this indicates code 34 (not sure that one exists). From there look it up in the FSM to know what code the ABS module is throwing. You can also have multiple codes at one time as well so pay attention.

Above left foot pad on carpet driver side. Make sure you get the correct one, one part number is for 15" wheels one for 16" wheels. Same module is used for 2wd or 4wd.

Yep 01 02 mounted behind dash on firewall no need to remove anything to get to it.
