Modifications you regret

285/70R17 tires: add lots of unsprung weight and no real benefit in low traction scenarios for my uses. Caused a noticeable hit to fuel economy/driving range and acceleration. Should have stayed with 265/70R17.

Sliders: they ended up making it more annoying for me to get in and out of the car (too tall to use them as steps) and I constantly ended up with dirt/muck on my pant legs, I only once lightly hit them while off-roading (so they were unnecessary for me), and they added a lot of weight and changed how the vehicle handled around corners.

I regret getting a TRD Pro, I’ve already swapped out the suspension and I have off-road bumpers coming. Could have saved some $ and gotten a different model and built it up. I thought to myself I would buy a TRD pro and not mod but I’ve modded all my cars prior haha

I regret not buying my 4Runner sooner. I've had a few in the past and recently got back into one. Didn't realize how much I missed it until it sat in my driveway again. I paid about $35K for my 2018 ORP and can't think of a single vehicle in the $50-60K range I'd trade it for. That is real owner satisfaction if you ask me.

Did you test drive a JL Rubicon? For 50-60 range I would feel massive soul crushing regret buying a 4Runner. Honestly I think 35k is the sweet spot. Anything more than that and imo I would have wasted money.

I bought used because new is stupid money. I got a 2010 for 15k. I havent finalized my plans but even at 15k in mods to include a supercharger and sweet audio setup, riding on 33s I have what a trd should be. What others pay to achieve in addition to that new steep Trd price tag.

i test drove some JL rubicons a couple of weeks ago and expected to really like it. i did not, felt like a 30k car, not 60. the first one i drove had a faulty audio system, the second i drove with a fox suspension and 35s drove like shit, and the third fully stock (and functional one) just wasnt that impressive. was smaller inside than expected as well

I regret going to 35's from 295's. It's not worth it. Looks great but too much work and too much stress on everything. I'm now back to 295's and I'm a lot happier with it.

I regret not going straight to kings. I've had so many lift kits and going straight to King's would have been one and done. (I still don't have them) lol

I loved my RTT. Don't regret owning it. It was fun while I had it. Just a real pain and I refused to drive around town with it on. I now have a Gazelle T4 Hub tent. It's amazing! But I would like to snag CVT's new hard shell tent. As for RTT, a pop up hard shell is the way to go.

I had a snorkel. It was cool but now that I went back to no snorkel I like the look a lot better.

I've already sold off most of all the ones I regret, but...

-Rooftop tent
-285 tires
-NON-resi shocks
-Cheap lights
-Toggle switches for my lights/accessories

I am sorry you had such a negative experience. We ended up getting a fully optioned out Rubicon earlier this year. Price is inflated, I will admit that. But man I love ours. Stock Rubi comes with 33s and ours rides great. It's my wife's dream car and I dont have to mod a thing now that it comes stock with all the good stuff. Led headlights, steel bumpers, 33s, 8 inch infotainment, heated seats and steering wheel, blind side monitoring, back up camera. Coming from her Sahara JK, the thing is a freaking Cadillac.

Cheap lights for sure, I went mid grade with Extreme LED and Lifetime LED and wouldn't do so again. The Lifetime is much better than the Extreme LED IMHO but both are short life and rust like crazy. (My Extreme LED mounting bolts and brackets rusted in 3 weeks) Plus the light output is much lower, You can buy a smaller Baja Designs light bar and get more light output.

Also roof rack mounted lighting. Wouldn't even consider that again. Lights on the bumper and/or ditch lights are better.

Cheap shocks/struts. Buy once cry once. Should have never gone Toytec and gone straight to Radflo

That's a great vehicle and the only one that could take my attention away from the T4R. I have never driven a JL, but I've driven many JK's and while they are outstanding off road I just couldn't deal with their on road behavior. The 4Runner is not a quiet vehicle but it sounds like a damn vault compared to the JK. IMO the Jeep, like a Corvette, is a perfect second vehicle. But as a daily it becomes a more difficult proposition. I hear the JLs are much more livable day in day out. Good for the Jeepers, they deserve it after all these years.

I rent a Wrangler about twice a year for a week at a time on vacation somewhere. It's a perfect way to remind me why I don't have one and don't want one. They're terrible daily drivers. Everything from fit/finish to road noise, ride quality on the road, and even the little stuff like door locks. I love the idea of having one (and I have an FJ40 already), but the rental once in a while gets my fix and reminds me why I don't have one in the driveway. By the end of the week I'm ready to turn the keys back in.

I only drove a JL that was fully stock, but I too thought it was insanely overpriced for what it is, and too small for my liking. I also notice so many Jeeps on the road have one taillight that is significantly brighter than the other. You hear about lots of electrical issues. It almost seems like Jeep employs blind people to do their wiring.

New JL is significantly improved. Night and day difference.

Wife loves hers. We picked up a loaded 4door JL Rubi. A week later we took it on a long road trip and it was perfect. Night and day difference from her old JK.

Ummmm, I hate to tell you this but Toytec shocks are made by Radflo.

Two reasons i didn't choose a Rubicon, one is not enough room for a family and it's made by Fiat/Chrysler where reliability is a huge question mark. No doubt they are superior off-road than anything out there but the stuff I do isn't crazy like you see LiteBrite doing.

Can you elaborate on the 285 tires? Too small? You're on 305 now, aren't you?

What do you regret about it? I've been going back and forth on Kings vs Icon.

Guessing it's because of the digressive valving on the Icon. They're good for handling on road because of the extra low speed damping, but the internal bypass on the Fox and Kings is night and day better over bumpy terrain.

IMO, go with remote reservoir Fox/Kings and buy once, cry once. Especially if you have KDSS which has less body roll to begin with. Handling is best tuned with sway bars anyway. King has great customer service, so get them anywhere, or get some custom valved Fox from Accutune Off-road and then you at least have Accutune customer service instead of dealing with Fox directly. Accutune has custom valved Kings too.
