Modified 3rd Gen Resale Values?

Greetings. I've recently been working to improve/enhance my 4runner with maintenance and mods such as suspension lift, LBJ replacement, etc and have much more on my list. Thanks to you all for the great info and writeups that have helped me!

Initially I had little expectation of this effort being anything more than a project for fun and learning but given the enthusiasm of the members here and on other sites it has recently occurred to me that if done well, and with some patience when listing, that at least a good part of hardware or part cost could be gotten back. There are two listing's on CL for Phoenix right now for guys selling lifted 3rd Gen 4runners at premium price points.

What experiences have you had in selling your used modified rigs, particularly regarding recouping your mod costs?

Modifying cars or trucks will never be a smart "investment". You put in money, but don't expect to get anything out except enjoyment. Sellers will have high asking prices on modded vehicles, but I doubt many of them get anywhere near their asking price.

The exception is when you are building something for a market where buyers invariably have lots of disposable income, such as restoring a classic vehicle, or building something truly unique with lots of custom work. Since the great recession even those don't get what they used to, and won't for some time IMO.

I agree you don't get your money back. But if the buyer is looking for a built rig then I look at it like this.

4Runner A: Stock, Average Condition, Not an enthusiast $9,000

4Runner B: Built, Up to date on maintenance, Enthusiast $11,000

I think you have the advantage in that situation.
