Money to be made off a 250k 4runner?

Hi all.

I have the opportunity to buy a 4runner that has 250k on it and in "fair" shape. It will most likely need a new engine, the rear hatch is broken and the window doesn't work, plus I think one of the rear view mirrors is broken off.

In general the car is in rough shape, lots of scratches on the exterior from trails, and also on the interior from dogs.

The option is to buy it somewhere around 2k and either try to part it out or put a new engine in it, fix some things then flip it. Do you guys there is anything to be made for someone trying to flip it? This is in Colorado, so the price of these is pretty inflated. The owner would try to fix and sell himself but he doesn't have the time or space.

UPDATE. Sorry for not replying to all who helped, I decided to not get the 4runner as after seeing it I decided there wasn't really anything to made.

More info needed, what year, model, 2wd or 4wd, which engine and what is the issue with the one in it, torn seat covers, what is broken wiith the hatch, any rust, any mods or all stock, etc., etc.?
 
What is the local cost of having the engine replaced? Even if you do it yourself there is still cost involved. Once operational how much is it worth with the extra pin stripping? At $2k, I'm not sure how you make any money.
 
Sounds like a ton of resource and money that you are going to need to get this T4R on its feet. If the body and frame are super clean, I would say dig into it. Doesn’t appear to be a ton of meat on the bone to make a nice return.

I was in a similar situation a few months ago.
My dad wanted a new truck. His 03 sr5 had paid its dues and at 247k miles, he had gotten his monies worth.

So I bought it off him. Clean engine, tranny feels great, exterior is beautiful.

I put some new rotors, calipers, pads, and tires and gave it a quick detail.
I trust it enough I will be taking it camping with my growing family.

Your situation sounds complicated and not worth the trouble. Good luck.
 
I would avoid it. I had a similar situation with a old '99 Jeep Cherokee with 200,000 mi. It's not worth it.
 
Also curious to how much people are willing to pay for 4th Gen 4runners. As soon as i have sufficient posts, I plan on starting a thread on mine.

Ex: 2005 Sr5, 2wd, 127xxx mileage.

That's very open ended. Location. Some areas have higher demand. 2wd vs 4wd. Transmission. Which engine and what year? Side airbags? Rear view camera? 3rd row seat? I know a 4th Gen on sale locally for $25k, very clean with 9k total miles. Down to $2k for the OP thread.
 
With a bad engine it’s worth maybe $500 based on your description, unless it has a good amount of aftermarket parts.

After visiting your profile I see you have been back to read what everyone has posted in reply, it would be nice if you replied to maybe answer some of our questions so we can respond further to help you out or if you have decided not to pursue this any longer, that would be nice to know as well.

Sorry about that. After I saw the car in person again I decided it wasn't worth the effort and that I wouldn't make any (or much) money. I've been back on the forum but not this post until now.

Plus my water heater is going out and I'll likely need the money for that.
