Money to burn

Hey Guys,

So lets say I'm probably going to run into some money I can burn. I have a 96 5spd 4x4 that I wheel. No E-Locker though. Stock it was very capable. I have yet to wheel the lift since it went on recently so I'm debating my next move. Currently I have a Sonoran 1.2a lift, 265/75R16 Terra Grapplers, a completed stereo system, a CB System and the rest stock.

Here's the deal.

If you could blow $4500 on your 4Runner what would your parts list look like? Remember, you already have wheels, tires, music or a lift.

I'm thinking Skids, Sliders, Front Bumper, Winch, E-Locker axle swap, Roof rack and a rear bumper with tire carrier. In that order but let's see what you guys come up with.

I'd do:

Rear bumper
GPS (Garmin)
Ultraguage
External Tranny Cooler
Winch
IPF lights
Sliders

All this would be about $1200-1500, estimated...

In addition, there is a lot of gear I'd like to add, such as a fire extinguisher and recovery gear.

I personally have a hard time justifying that much money into one vehicle that could be wrecked anytime...

Do people tell their insurance about all this when they add stuff (like lifts and lights and winches, etc? Can you get cash for your upgrades in the event of an accident?
 
Thanks. I really want the ARB and I need some protection. I already dinged my rocker a bit and my stock skid has a few dings as well. All before the lift though.

Here's my current price sheet;
Junkyard E-Locker $500
Budbuilt Skids $500
Arb $900 -- I need find a better deal on this but I want one
Gobi Stealth Roof Rack $1300 -- It looks so good and I want a full length so I can run Limb Risers
Sliders $350 or so -- Not sure which I like best yet though
Winch ???? So many options
Rear Bumper with Tire carrier ???? I may try to build one


With my known prices I'm at $3550 before shipping and etc. Admittedly, the rack is just a vanity thing but I really want one. :bash:

You can tell your insurance about permanent mods and get them insured I believe. Every time I insure a car they ask me about it. And I've insured lots of cars. Removable mods though you might want to keep on the DL since they might take them in the case of a total loss. Personal choice on that I'd figure.

I could use a better recovery kit though. It's planned to be more of an expedition vehicle then a "rock toy".
 
IF you have that kind of money, I'd go front & rear ARB lockers vs. a front ARB with a rear e-locker. Keep it all one system, ya know?

Yeah it makes sense but I hear it's almost $3K to get them and have them installed. Kinda of pricey when the E-Locker is cheap in comparison and a factory part. A front would be nice but I don't think I wheel hard enough yet to need one.
 
Yeah, if its just a rear locker you want, then the elocker retrofit is the best bet.


On that other chunk of change.. armor it up, get some 285s, done.

If I was going to 285s I'd get a front and rear junkyard diffs from an auto with an E-locker. Then I'd be 4.30s vs my current 4.10s.

It's a good point though. Maybe I should look into a the gear swap for future mods

Nice! Personally, I plan to have mine, like you put it, more of an expedition rig than a rock climber... I plan to have lots of extra fluids, good recovery straps (and d-rings on my ARB bumper - check out my build thread for pics, see sig) - though I'm just now starting out since I bought my rig recently...

But yeah, more of an expedition, "prepared-for-everything" kind of rig is what I have in mind... like a jack of all trades rig :trophy:

Exactly, I want to be able to be visiting friends and decide to go camping for the night on my way home or for the night. Or go for a ride with no notice.

lots of lights, possibly atop a new roof rack
supercharger + fuel upgrades + URD 2.2
onboard air compressor
1st gen roll bar (usually pretty cheap, $40-60)
Rear disk conversion
Headers/exhaust + intake
LED tail lights $150
Wheel paint
1" body lift $109
Fire extinguisher


If you haven't done these:

Tacoma lower ball joints/tie rod ends
Polyurethane steering rack and sway bar bushings
Marlin crawler shifter seat and socket bushings (cheap and effective as fck)
Diff breather mod
231mm Tundra brake upgrade
 
If I had that kind of money to spend, Id do some top end work on my engne with almost 190k, then supercharge it. But i know supercharger isnt a necessary mod for wheeling.
 
I'd be like Bandit Runner: buy a welder and learn to weld my own front and rear bumpers. Then do a light upgrade.

As others have said, set aside some for preventative maintenance such as changing out the radiator and installing new LBJs.
