If you "upgrade" you 4Runner by replacing the Toyota parts, especially plugs, wires ect with AutoZone sh$t parts then you will probably lose power not gain it. Get your parts from a Toyota dealership online; no autoZone parts allowed.

I've got pretty good performance for a non-aspirated 4Runner.

There's a used 1st gen supercharger here in colorado for sale. If I remember right the asking price is 600.

 4Runner not so spunky anymore?

Even with a supercharger, towing is not going to be your strong point. It is fun though. Glad you realize the true cost.

Depending on when you plan on putting a blower on there, I say wait on the new plugs as its smart to switch to cooler ones anyway once you do put it on. I say, do the deckplate mod, then the ISR or this:Airaid MIT Modular Intake Tube 99 00 01 02 Toyota 4Runner V6 (this is what I did and I LOVE it).
That way you can maintain the factory airbox. Also, make sure you do an external tranny cooler if you are going to be towing!!

 I was thinking the same thing

To the OP, nothing you do short of an S/C will make a noticeable difference. If you can't afford one, do a tuneup, clean your MAF, and maybe take some stuff out of the truck that you don't need.

Don't waste your money on Autozone crap.

i know it may and probably wont make a noticeable difference. what about a throttle body spacer? thinking a K&N air filter so it can be washed and such. and used s/c here are super rare, i have seen 2, and new is about 4.5 grand. doing a CA intake should help some. and was watching a truck show and they said that E3 sparks are pretty good and dinoed them and they helped.

I know we don't like each other, but seriously man, read over what you're typing... that's a whole load of nonsense.

TB spacers won't do anything for a 5VZ. Many members have bought them and regretted their money wasted.

A K&N intake will not improve anything by itself, either. Most people are lucky if they feel a difference. Overall, it won't get you feeling better about your trucks performance.

5VZ Superchargers can be had for much less than 4.5k... where did you get your figures? I see them sell for 2k brand new all the time online. I paid $1,500 for my used unit (+750 rebuild) and my 3RZ S/C is typically more expensive than the 5VZ S/C

I'd bet a dollar that the NGK dual tipped plugs that are supposed to be in the 5VZ will work better than E3's in your engine.

Don't take it as me slandering you, I'm not the only one in this thread who will say this exact thing.

watch ebay. sc pop up all the time for much less than 4.5 or i can find you one, they pop up on cl here fairly often for about $800-1200. keep in mind you are gonna want several other mods to go along with the sc, so budget that in. you might want the 7th injector kit or at least some larger injectors, the airraid tube or something similar, and maybe a wideband or at least an extra gauge or two. also urd's tensioner pulley is a good idea i would say. then from there theres a lot more to add if you like, lol!

and you will be fine towing. my friend tows like 12k pounds in his sc taco. the rear frame is twisted from it, but it does it, lol!

I have recently talked to LC engineering about gaining performance from the 5VZ. They said the most they were able to get out of one(non-boosted) wsa 350hp with full custom pistons heads, cams everything under the sun. Now scary part, 2.7 4 cyl they got 500HP doing same mods. Boosted you can get more HP and there are youtube videos of twin turbo 800hp tacomas with the 3.4 but not recommended. Personally I would wait for the S/C get the URD fuel injection upgrade, the IPT valve body upgrade and call it good. The only other area that might help with towing is a regear.

FYI- Toyotas only like to run the OEM spark plugs and will hate anything else. Domestic products do seem to benefit from the e3 plugs and plenty of dino results to back it up.

Plugs are never a bad idea, but don't go the cheap route.. Everything else you listed, will do nothing but make more noise.. You may see minimal gains from a c.a kit, but only if you do exhaust along with it and even then I wouldn't waste the money. You've basically got 3 options- supercharger, turbo or just swap the entire motor. Keep in mind also, your not going to get much out of a turbo or a blower either. It will be better but a far cry from fast.

what were the torque numbers on those engines though???

well, you can stick as big of a turbo as you want on any car, so you actually could make it plenty fast actually. regear with 26 inch tires, itll fuggin fly. the s/c adds more torque than hp, so i dont know why people always bring fast into the equation anyways. but compered to a non boosted runner it will be by all means FAST, lmao! having the extra torque with the sc is definitely noticable when you are at a 4runner/taco romp meet. it def adds the power needed to make up for adding on 2k+ pounds of off road gear when youre out there. they rock. :fro:

i have it geared to 4.56 because i blew my 4.10s out. yes i know 4.88 are what i need but after replacing the clutch not 2 weeks earlier i was kind of on a budget, had to sell a truck to pay it. i say 4.5 because i went to the dealer, thats for a 4th gen s/c, with what i need, though to say they have not done a s/c on a 4runner, have done tundras and know what they do though. i would be sceptical about ebay because i have yet to figure out what all needs to be done to the truck to s/c it, so i would be afraid to not get all the parts it needs. and where i am 4runner parts are super rare, and most are for 1st gens. if the K&N wont work thats fine, wont do, but i do have the flowmaster 44. but still think it wouldnt hurt to get new sparks. i didnt plan on turboing it at all. im not wanting to go FAST, im just wanting something that works, its getting stripped down to am off road rig only pretty well. BUT H**L IF I COULD GET 450 HP I WOULD BE SET!!!
