Morimoto HID issues. Sometimes only 1 side turns on.

To those who opposed me, I respect your feelings on this but I’ve been a part of multiple forums and I keep seeing the same thing over and over again with Morimotos. I made the purchase of my unit thinking exactly what was stated...there are so many kits out there that this is a fluke and not the norm.

Wrong.

You shouldn’t have to cycle your lights or question whether the kit is working properly. That’s ridiculous, especially for the price. If you’re okay with doing that, then by all means, please go ahead with the purchase.

In my own experience, these were a disaster and I’ve seen too many people share THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. It’s not a coincidence. Good luck to all who pay a premium for a sub-par unit. That’s all I’ll say and I’ll respectfully remain silent on this moving forward.

Bringing this back up. Had the Morimot Ballast replaced on a warranty and it just died again. Same exact side.

My brother has the same kit on his Tundra and his is flickering or turning on and off over bumps. Weather has been subzero for 10 days which someone else has mentioned it happening in the cold. But, my first ballast was dying in the spring/summer weather.

Hopefully they'll replace this ballast on warranty also.

At the end of the day, any aftermarket kit isn't going to come close to the quality of an OEM setup like BMW, Audi etc. Their OEM systems are near bullet proof. I used to retrofit, and I only used OEM parts from those manufacturers.

All aftermarket HID stuff is 2nd tier quality in my opinion. Sad but true.

Im experiencing the same issue where the passenger side sometimes does not ignite with my Xenon Depot HID kit (philips bulbs). Usually fixed with a single switch toggle, but sometimes it takes 3-4. XD support suggested I install the relay harness, which I did but does not appear to have fixed anything. I am going to request a new ballast+igniter tomorrow under warranty, this kit is less than 6 months old and it's been problematic from the start.

Having owned a Morimoto kit since 2014, the only time I’ve had an issue with one side failing to ignite is when a relay went bad and TRS took care of it. This same kit that I’ve had installed on two 4th gen 4Runner’s is now on the wife’s Venza. The bulbs that came with the kit have been replaced because they were getting pretty tired.

Is this kit as good as a proper retrofit with OEM parts? Nope but it has done an adequate job thus far.

this is how sponsors and forums work....im never paying a penny over $50 for an hid kit. ive never had a lesser one from a company that doesnt hover on message boards break on me....ITS ALL CHINESE. once you start buying chinese knock off of chinese stuff thats been bought by a company with money you realize that yes. some chinese person will ALWAYS make an exact copy or close with inside info and access to parts. personally i think you an absolute idiot if yolu buy any of these $100+ hid kits. ive had both ive been on bimmerforums and other forums i know how this dumbass cult mentality shit works and sponsors posting on message boards so people will ahev their back.

same thing for me.

First Morimoto kit lasted 1.5 years. One side would occasionally stop lighting up. Then the light output started to turn green and the other side stopped firing sometimes as well. This is installed with the relay harness.

Black Friday was around the corner so I ordered a 2nd Morimoto kit. Installed a new one with the new relay harness from the kit. It lasted just over 1 year then one side would fire and the other side would flicker until 1 side wouldn't fire at all. I ripped it out and threw it in the trash.

I then got the Xtreme Depot kit before they got bought out by TRS. So far so good and it's been 1.5 years (knock on wood). If these go, then I'm just to go rip out HIDs H11s and just install an H9 bulb into the H11 projectors by trimming the H9 bulb's base with a dremel.

To troubleshoot I swapped ballast from one side to the other and again only one side turned on. I left it like that until until I get back to the vendor. Well a week later that ballast died leaving me without headlights.

I'm not sure why but all 3 ballasts died on the driver side. My first mistake was buying from eBay and the seller responded at first and now is complete avoiding me.

2nd mistake is buying Morimoto. They have a 5 year warranty only if you buy from them or their certified dealers. Which leads me to mistake #1 lol. Now I'm screwed.

I either buy 2 new ballast from TRS or Morimoto or scrap the whole kit and buy something else. I'm so pissed because these should last more than 20 months.

Can you use a diff manufacturer ballast and bulb, like diode dynamics, with these morimoto projector housings? If so may be an option to consider.

I'm about to place order with one of the hid retrofit vendors for morimoto fxr but all this negativity make me reconsider going with the RX350 projectors.

I'm using the factory projector housing on my 4runner. I ordered some cheapo ballast on Amazon so I can test the rest if the system/parts. I believe they use use the same AMP connectors. I won't know until I get the parts in this week.

If you're getting them from TRS they are a Master Dealer so warranty issues should be easy.

I ended up buy some 55w ballasts on Amazon. I installed them a few days ago and my lights are working so for sure I know both Morimoto ballast died.

Prior to that, I sent emails to TRS as well as Morimoto and did not hear a response. Today I got an email from both requesting more info so they can try to assist me. I just need to destroy the old ballast and TRS will send me a new set.:bravo::cheer2:

My hats off to TRS for the help. Lesson learned to buy from authorized places.

My Xenon Depot were acting up a year after install. My problems were they werent firing both drivers & passengers side. Only one or the other. A power cycle was a workaround, but then I started to realise my driver side would slightly flicker when idle at a red light. I contacted support and didnt hear back from them for a few days so I read up a bit on other forums on HID retros.

I read on one forum that when using the factory harness, it can sometimes be a task for the stock harness to provide enough power to the ballasts + ignitors for both HIDs. I followed all the guides to plug ballasts directly into the factory headlight harness and didnt think twice about the relays that they provided in the kit. I decided to install the relays and I havent had a problem with them since.

Just my $.02 for anyone else having this problem.

I’m sorry but guys, please stop overpaying for these crap Morimoto kits. I used a kit that gave me nothing but issues as you guys have described. It also caused insane radio interference when the headlights were on. They’re overpriced garbage and that’s simply the truth.

My $35 kit purchased off amazon has lasted me 4 years now and have been absolutely flawless and better than the morimoto in every single way. I thought price mattered in terms of buying a quality kit and man have I been proven wrong.

such a bummer for those of you who that had a bad experience with Morimoto HID system; i purchased mine thru TRS and haven't had one issue! system has been installed and used for 1yr 2mo with majority of the driving being at night. Definitely have not experienced anything some of you have described.
