Motor swap???!

hey, once i save up a bit more cash i'm going to do the sas on my 94, looking at upgrading my motor seeing as my 3.0 is terrible enough at turnin my 32's. Wondering what popular swaps are. I have heard guys talk about a 3.4l? What does this come out of and would my tranny fit or would the entire drivetrain be replaced. Thanks for now any insight is appreciated

for my 32's its copable, but once the sas is done i wanna go 35's or 36's, and the only way i'd have decent enough power to do any sort of wheelin i'd have to gear her way down, which makes the trucker rather useless for me for highway driving, i'm a truck driver so i only really drive it to work once a week, but on weekends we do wheeling around the valley where i live. but that hour long trip to work and back would be very long if i had to re-gear to the point where i could only do 40mph at 3000rpm just to keep my 3.0 in it. i would sooner take my motor out, sell it cause it was completely rebuilt 5000km ago and upgrade the drivetrain
 
The 3.0 is fine for doing 35s & offroading. If your having that hard a time doing anything driving wise, I'd find where the problem is. What gear ratio do you have?

the motors that u are looking for come out of 96 to 02 4runners. and i do believe that to do the swap u will need the trans from that motor too. if u do some looking over the internet you will find many items on this. also if u go to yotatech.com they have a section on just doing that swap.
 
TBar, I think you are a bit confused as to what low gears do when combined with taller tires. If you're running 35's and you regear to 5.29's, it's not going to turn your truck into a tractor, or limit you in any way--in fact, it's simply making it drive like stock again. Just because the number is large doesn't mean it's a radical modification--you need a large number to offset those tires. I had 35's with the wimpy 3.0, but with proper 5.29's, you couldn't even tell--it had all the original acceleration, and ran great on the highway, even getting similar mpg.

alright, i know my buddy is selling his 98 4rnr, it got t-boned and he bought it back from insurance for dirt cheap. Last i heard he was gonna sell me the whole truck for 300 bucks. I am running the stock 4.88 gears right now, and with my 32's the 3.0 already feels sluggish.
 
If your running 4.88s, you shouldn't feel sluggish at all. Yes the 3.0 is a tad underpowered but not so much so that you can't move it faster than 40mph.. Like I said, if it feels like that, theres something wrong. I have a 3.0 manny tranny running muds on your size tires with 4.56s, I can zoom all day with it.
 
i would say u need to look at other things then. i have 4.56 gears with 33s and i do feel like going up hills i have to push it a little more then i normal have to but it can still make it up the hill going good speeds. u might want to check ur fuel filter spark plugs and wires. check to see where ur timing is set at too, and the filter for ur trans if u are an automatic trans.
 
Just to put this into perspective for you, most 4runners have the 22re motor. Stock that motor has about 110hp and about 100 ft/lbs of torque. The 3.0 has about 150hp and I believe about 130ft/lbs of torque. There are plenty of people who run 35-37" tires with 5.29 gears and still run a stockish 22re 4 cylinder motor. If your motor is so under powered that you're not able to maintain highway speeds then there's a mechanical issue with your drivetrain.
 
I third that motion--if you have 4.88's with 32's, your truck should feel fine. Plus, I've never heard of "stock" 4.88's--where did you hear those are stock? Usually it's 4.10 with manual, 4.56 with auto--those are all I've ever heard, anyway. Like SV and Priest said, you likely have something wrong with that engine.
 
The 4.88 diffs came stock in the 90-95 v6 4runners with the tow package. I have them in my 4runner right now. I just had to swap my axle tubes over from my non add diff to the newer 4.88 add diff.

me to! they are far skinnier than the 4.56's, the only downside to them is that if you break a tooth you have to get another ring from the dealer.... a normal "v6" ring and pinion that is 4.88 wont work in them... there... "special" best thing is that if you know what your looking for with the right part numbers and such you can go get a great deal from someone who is parting out their truck and hasnt done their homework on it.
