I'm stealing this idea from a thread I saw on the 3rd Gen page...
Show us your mountings in your dash area for iphones/androids, tablets, etc.! I am working out how to do the cleanest, most accessible way of having stuff mounted. So far, I've seen some cool ideas over there, but I also know that the Classic guys have awesome engineering!

I have a RAM mount for my iPad and cell phone , nothing special but it's solid off road , almost no vibration...mounts are pretty easy to install on first and second gen dashboards.

i could almost tell you...........

i was going to get one for my cross-country trip to the southwest, but i didn't. it looks like it would work pretty well, and i still might get one.

I would avoid that long seat rail mount ^^^ . It acts like a giant lever when you put any weight at the end of it. A dash mount with a short arm, less than 6", is the way to go ...

i tried one on a road trip to montana, bounced around like frigging crazy.

I scored this Ram mount for about $40 on ebay. It works awesome

So today was sort of like Christmas for me when I got home from work. I scored a Ram Tablet Mount on eBay for 20% of what they go for new. This one is used but functions awesome. It is missing the right side retainer but the spring loaded tongs hold the tablet well.

The dual suction mounts are extremely secure even with a 10" Tablet.
Even my blind old Vision balls can see the map.
Nice thing is it is easily moved from vehicle to vehicle

I think I'd have to agree about the long mount.
So, I'm only starting with a phone mount. I'll get to the table mount down the road. I've found that suction cups seem to lose their suction. At least, the ones for my Garmin Nuvi do. I got one idea for mounting to the grab handle and having my phone above the dashline on the left side: RAM Mounts' X-Grip ~ Living Overland
Mounted in a 3rd Gen, I think.
I also considered mounting using a Panavise adapter plate that screws right next to the heater controls (to the right). I kinda want to keep whatever I do as high as possible just so I don't have to take my eyes too far off center, but not create a blind spot.
Another idea I have seen is bolting a ball mount for RAM at the top of dash area, right next to the center vents. I'm kind of liking that idea... it definitely hits my ideal area, and would only block the 4-way flashers and rear defrost switches. But I hate drilling holes through the dash.

here's my ball, just right of the vents above the glovebox. This mount is uber strong , just be sure when you add the arm and tablet you can still open your glovebox...

Very sturdy. We run one in my wife's TJ and in my 1st gen. It bolts to the passenger seat bolt by the center console and the arm doesn't bounce that much. What's nice is the adjustability so you can suck it up to the dash or bring it over the shifter.

So I've made the decision to go a route similar to V_Man's... I'll post the pics once I get parts and do some installing!

Got it installed, and test run, and I really like it!! Went with some of the RAM components. Bolted in just to the left of the center vents in my dash. Here are the pic's:
