Moving to NJ - Future Purchase Question

Good Morning Folks,

In the near future I will be moving to the Garden State. I have a 3rd gen 4Runner that I will be selling in the near future. In its place, I'd like to pick up a new 2015 TE Premium 4Runner.

It seems that NJ doesn't have the most stellar rep for commerce (not sure if this is deservedly so or not). The sales tax rate isn't bad in NJ (7% versus 8% in Georgia). Are there any major gotchas (other taxes, fees, etc.) that I should consider before making a determination to purchase a new car in Jersey?

Thanks!!
G

I'm in NJ and bought a 2015 regular Trail (not premium) in Feb. Other than the sales tax the only other major fee I recall is that they require you prepay the first 4 years of registration. Also a $1.50 tax per tire.

At least when I bought mine the bigger issue was low inventory of 4Runners, especially Trails. Most were SR5's or Premiums and I had to hunt to find the Trail I wanted.

Good luck ..

Exactly what he said. You must pay for first fours of a "new" car registration up front in NJ. I think an SUV is like $70 or so a year. I will look at mine later when i get a chance. Tire fee which is minimal.

Depending on where you are moving too. I have some friends at local dealers and one great salesman I used for myself a few years back. I am outside of philly in southern NJ.

Wow, four years for real?! Two years seems to be the norm elsewhere. Can you recommend a dealer? I will be at McGuire AFB.

Thanks!

Thanks for your response! I will be at McGuire. Can you PM me the details with your dealer & sales person?

Thanks Again,

I am bit further south from you. It would take you a good 40 plus minutes if not closer to an hour to get down here. My dads last station was at that base when he was coming out. When you land here, shoot me a pm if you still need some help.

I've used Dayton Toyota up in South Brunswick. Haven't bought a car from them, but the service department as well as the parts guys are really good. Nothing bad to say about them. With that said, I drove up to NY (6 hr Round trip) to get my used truck, the price was way better than anything I could find in NJ and I searched for a good 4 to 5 months.

Being .mil is GA your home state? When I was in, I kept my vehicles licensed in Iowa and never had an issue with the law. Perhaps things have changed as it was a LOT of years ago for me, but if you can get a better deal on plates in your home state check into it. We all know that the renumeration is not the best while serving. PS, Thanks for your service to our country.
