MPG Drop After MAF Cleaning

Hey all.

Followed the MAF Sensor cleaning steps found in the Maintenance section here and my next tank of fuel dropped by a full MPG.

Any thoughts on why or what I need to do to get back to at least pre-cleaning MPG?

I would assume its just reading different and your MPG didn't actually change if you just did the cleaning. the digital gauge is not very accurate and your mpg can vary depending on your style of driving, type of fuel, and how much you try to cram into the tank. I have seen readouts ranging from 360 to 420 ( V6 = 18-21 MPG) on a single tank but my mileage always comes back to around 19. I cleaned mine along with the throttle body and my computer was all funky with its readings for the rest of the day but after sitting overnight and driving again the next day it went right back to the normal range.

I wish I were just going off of the digital gauge but typically when I fill it, the gauge goes to ~370mi to empty but the last time I did it said 323mi to empty, so I noted the mileage (94,462) and when I filled up this morning (18.1 gal), the math came to 17.2 MPG= (94,774-94,462)/17.2.

I generally get 18.1-18.3 MPG (figuring it gallons/mi) given my drive is 90% freeway.

Did you disconnect the battery? That would wipe the ECU's fuel maps so until it relearns your engine and driving mpg may be lower.

I did actually. Didn’t even think about that...

So just keep driving it my normal way and maybe periodiacally calculating the MPH?

Yes - that is correct - you'll see better MPG shortly. If you want even better mileage, switch diff. and transfer case fluids to Redline/Amsoil 75w90 and use 91/92 octane - I avg. about 15.5-16.0 mpg in the city after doing this.
