Mpg

To reset it, hold down the Reset button while the MPG is displayed.

But seriously, don't go by it, as it's usually about 10% too high. Calculate your real MPG using the odometer and the gas pump.

yea, go by your actual pump and see how many miles you can juice out from that fresh tank.

well, not every v8 can do same mpg because of a lot of factors. ie: elevation, octane rate on gas, driving condition... some other factors in your living environment, temperature...... air density (if air filter is dirty or clog up, it will affect mpg also)

Well it's a new truck so I doubt anything is clogged. I've used 91 octane fuel since the day I got it. Since premium burns hotter, does that means it burns up faster? Could the problem possibly be that it's just burning off faster than a lower octane would, resulting in less miles per tank of fuel?

My computer thing is always anywhere between 19.4 to 21.8 and NEVER has it been correct. I always check my MPG with each full tank and It always comes out between 17.4 to 18.6mpg, driving is 50/50 city and highway. The most MPG I ever got was 20mpg.

well when I run my tank down to empty i'm going to fill it up with regular and not premium. See how it does.

I've only run regular in mine, dont see a need to use anything higher.

I was getting around 22.3 - 22.4 on mine using 87 (V6 in 2WD), added 89 during my last fill-up and now I am getting around 22.1 on the average. It has been getting a lot colder in the past few days up here in the Northeast so maybe the weather is a factor, will fill-up with 87 again the next time and see what happens.

i just got back from a long road trip (1500 miles in 3 days). my MPG comes out to be 17~18. i was driving aroumd 85mph the whole way. is this normal?

Okay so my girlfriend wanted to go to Sea World in San Diego, so today I took her. I got ,my tank to about 1/8 full over the last week to try and get most of the Premium gas burned off. I filled it with regular, and after driving 85-90mph to sea world, and 60-85mph on the way back (traffic) which is about 93 miles each way. My MPG meter now says 15.8 instead of the usual 12.5(ish). So I guess it was a fuel thing. It hasn't gone down at all yet since i've gotten back in to the city so i'll keep an eye on it over the next week or so.

I'm going to add my 2cents in here.

First off, if you want your true reading, you should be resetting your MPG settings every tank full, along with the average speed display. Unless you're trying to check what your MPG is for the year or month, you really won't have an accurate sample of what you're doing per tank.
Second, If you've got a v6, your mileage might/could actually be the same or less than what the V8's can achieve. That extra V8 power actually moves the vehicles easier, thus doesn't have to work as hard as the V6. If you put your foot down constantly, you're better off with the V8.
Here at altitude in Colorado, I usually get better in city and highway than my buddies V6.
With that said, my 2005 V8 Sport would pull about 16.5-19 combo, but I actually hit 24MPG one tank full strictly highway. (only once though) That was using miles divided by gallons on paper, not the display, and I was heading east from Colorado to Kansas.
I hope to attain the same or better with my new 07 V8 limited.

On one last note: I have never used Premium fuel in either one of my V8 4 runners. The V8 has never been required to use Premium fuel. This is an advantage over other compitition such as the V8 touareg. Now you want to talk about POOR MPG!

Just my 2cents worth.

Yeah somehow I don't think that would be the problem when I just got through explaining that it went up 3-4mpg just switching to regular fuel, thus proving that premium burns off faster since it's a higher octane and burns hotter.

With a V8 I don't have to have a "lead foot" to get it going. You might have to with a V6, which would then back up Rennur's hypothesis. That's why I didn't cheap out on my 4runner. Always fun to hear someone's theories though. :lmao:

I find my dash comp. to be very accurate . It is meant to give averages and when I fill up , take a trip , check my speed to the average it is pretty much dead on.

Anyway I get 16.5 consistently ( summer blend fuel) with my 06 V8 4x4 for rural country driving mixed with city. This past week I had to drive into the city everyday , about a 50 min. drive , very heavy stop and go traffic on freeway. My milage dropped to 14.5. When I filled up my milage/gallons came to 14.5 , my comp. read 14.8. If I was to add in the factor of distant travel with my larger tires it probably would be right on.

That doesn't sound quite right to me (but I'm no engineer). Sure the V8 has more power but also has more cylinders requiring fuel and is heavier, therefore surely the overall result is higher fuel consumption, period. I've never heard of a V8 being more fuel efficient than a V6 on average, especially for urban driving.

My mileage varies from about 12 to 22 (measured the old fashioned way). The 12 is in SF where hills and constant stops are the norm.

it does, and it is true. by comparing 2 similar vehicles tundra VS 4Runner. my 07 v8 is running average of 14.5 mpg and my dad's 06 v6 tundra 2x4 is doing about the same, around 14.5 to 15. he do more highway speed than i do ~55mph constant, but i do more city stop and go traffic.

we've been comparing the records of our mpg and now he regrets that he should get the v8 4x4 at the first place.

he thought his v6 2x4 18 city/22 highway should be good enough compares to my v8 14 city/17 highway, but reality they are showing identical numbers.

Tundra & 4Runner similar? in weight, engine displacement (well we know its .7 litres) but the big difference between those two is coefficient of drag x frontal area. The Tundra is much more - draggier with a larger frontal area so a huge chunk of engine power is going to try to overcome wind resistance.
