MT/R's Vs A/T's

Search and you'll find tons of stuff on different tires here.
In short, true Mud tires like BFG, Maxxis Buckshots, and such are going to be quite loud on the road. I ran mud tires for years on my old Tacoma. Even rotating them every 5-6k miles, they will still cup and become loud. I would guess the most miles you'll get out of a set up mud tires would be 30-40k, I averaged 30.
A/T tires on the other hand are just a touch louder than stock/street tires. There are some out there with a 50k mile warranty. BFG A/T's are known for long tread life at 50k + and they look cool, however they have there drawbacks. Not good in mud, tend to hydroplane, and very expensive.
After running mud tires for so long, I can say I do miss them, but only on a couple occasions per year when I'm in some sticky muddy duck hunting situations.
Bottom line, unless you spend ALOT of time off road I would stick with A/T. Some guys will tell you different, but your 4runner will be rougher and louder w/ the M/T's. Hope that helps!

i got about 8k miles on my MTR right now. Tread life seems to be holding up nicely, (not sure how they will be 10k miles from now...) Mostly mixed driving city/highway. On the freeway they perform better than expected, speeds up to 75pmh, there was a short breaking in time as they tended to wander a little at higher speeds, but that has stopped now.
If your looking for some quiet tires, MTR aren't those. But that wasn't an issue for me. I'm sure there are some other members who have some more miles on theirs and can elaborate a little bit more on tread life.
I have had a couple sets of the old MTRs and would get about 45k -50k out of them. I would think the new ones would also do well. They were great on road tires esp. considering how aggressive they are. I have a friend that has the new MTRs and he is very happy with them on road and they do very good off road, better than any AT will do. The BFG ATs are know to last along time so if long wear is priority I would consider them, if performance is more important I would go with the MTRs.

I have ran both AT's & MT's.
The Nitto Terra Grapplers 265/70R17 AT's ride much quieter then the MT's I have had on so far. TG's handled great on & off road in dirt, mud, sand and snow. Thread life is pretty good, still have the set and it has about over 60% thread on it still.
Currently I am running BFG KM2's LT285/70R17 MT's and they have worked great in dirt, mud, sand and snow. The road sound isn't that bad also. The thread were is very good on these.
My previous MT's were Coopers STT's LT285/70R17 and they did great in everything but icy roads. The road sound was surprising quiet for a MT. Also great thread life for MT's, only reason I changed over is from damage on some of the MT thread chucks cause by climbing ledges while off roading.

Agreed I am also considering changing out my KM2's for the Duratrac's, it's a good all around cross hybrid tire.
Similar to a Duratrac is also the Nitto Trail Grapplers, they handle like a MT but ride and sound like a AT.

Check out the Kelly Safari TSR as well. They're made by Goodyear, look like the duratrac for about $50 cheaper per tire. Mean looking A/T. Hopefully I'll have a set in the next few months. Marc P on the board has them:

I've looked at the General grabber as well, but I like the agressiveness of the kelly and duratrac. Just keep in mind that stock you MAY have a slight rub as it's only .1" thinner than the BFG A/T

I am going with the Kelly Safari TSR in 265/70/17. I have a shop that will price match Discount Tires, Custom Wheels, Rims, Goodyear, Michelin, Cooper Tires and I am getting 4 tires, balanced and installed for $657.00.
