Mud flap build?? (jaos replica)

Okay guys like the post says, though some find them a little too.. bright, i love the red jaos mud flaps. However would rather put 600 bucks towards a bumper.. or visa , than mudflaps. I can get something like these from the local crappy tire

and of course want to make them looks like..

So apart from any trimming, i want to paint them red atleast the outside (rear of flap). Anyone have any ideas for paint that will stick, as well id love to get something similar to the chrome/metal plates at the bottom with holes which apparently keep them from flapping in the wind. Id also love to be able to add the stainless steel "control cable"

SO guys any ideas??

Big ass red mud flaps are definitely not to everyone's taste, other than the Subaru folks that is! I'm a big rally fan though so I'm a sucker for big flaps like those Jaos ones. The price is insane though! Have you thought of going with some Sparco or universal Rally Armor ones?

The Sparcos can be found for $20-30 a pair, the Rally Armor are more but still far less than Jaos.

Although I like your idea to fab some replicas up, I think it would be a bit tricky to get them looking as good as you'd like.

Ikea chopping board mud flaps.

$2.99 for two chopping boards. I'm sure you can find something similar at a dollar store.

Find some perforated metal and rivet them to the chopping boards. Voila,DIY Jaos mud flaps

F-everything I ever learned... I am quitting my job and selling JAOS mud flaps!

That price is stupider than Gumbalf's $18k 3rd gen 4runner (not to dis burtman specifically, I am sure that is in line with other retailers, but I can't find anyone else selling them). There is no way to justify that price for anything other than specifically wanting the JAOS name. The material is not exotic. The metal is just aluminum. You probably have $30 of material at most, and that would be retail prices, not the prices Jaos pays.

I will make you a set of red flaps from the same material, same design, same everything expect the label for $450. You just paypal me your money...

Did a little googling, and it looks like you could buy sheets of EVA plastic in lots of colors. There are 2mm x 9 x 12 in sheets readily available for use as a craft material, cheap as crap.

I am sure you could fins a 3mm sheet somewhere for not much, then you'd have "REAL $500 FLAPS FOR JUST A FEW DOLLARS!!!"

Go to home depot, and in their structural steel section they have some steel strips with holes in them, might work for you. They are about 1-2" wide, and the holes are much bigger than the ones in the JAOS flaps, but it might look similar.

Or you could just get an aluminum flat strip from that same section and drill some holes in it to match the JAOS, that would be very similar, and super easy.

For the strap, HD also sells various types of cable by the foot. You could get any of those and crimp ends on them and use that. The cable would be way stiffer than the strap your picture shows (not sure if JAOS changed from the cable to the strap, or the other way around).

Post pics if you end up doing this, I'd love to see what you can do!

Here are some options for getting EVA sheets. The first is primarily grey, but colors may be available if they have it in stock. Hobby lobby has them in many colors if you click back in their hierarchy list

Yoga Mats, Exercise Mat, Polyethylene Foam, Yoga Mat, Exercise Mats

These may not be as strong a formulation as the JAOS ones, but for $1 a piece, it's gotta be worth a try

Your math is off, that's a 3000% mark up... Still less than the mark-up for JAOS.

So I couldn't believe they were so expensive, and I went to Burtman Indus. website. He has them listed on "sale" for $538 for a set of 4. However, he also has that they are usually $239 per pair individually...which makes it $478 for two pair, or a set of 4. So the "sale" price is $60 more than if you bought separately...doesn't make very much sense to me...although neither does mudflaps for $478!!!

They do make nice products, but i just dont see how a manufacturer can defend those prices.
