Mud flap build?? (jaos replica)

Man those turned out nice... I would be willing to pay nearly $600 for a set :lmao: but seriously IMO the only difference between yours and the more expensive ones is the logo ... I do see you ended up going with the steel though make sure to keep us posted and let us know how it holds up (I have seen plenty of galvanized steel rust)

Lol don't forget about your discount! I'm going to spray paint sometttthing not sure what, any ideas??? I think it'll be much better with some black.. Lotsa black :)
 
Haha, this thread is awesome.

IMO, all Jaos equipment is far too overpriced. I like their 3rd gen spoiler design, but that's about all I'd consider for my own 4Runner.

Those mud flaps, though, the price is ridiculous. I'm going to keep this thread in mind, though, I'd like to make some flaps for my Probe, haha.

Yea I think black would look fabulous and go along with your whole black/red theme..... one question how did you paint the toyota logo on your center caps soo well? any tricks those turned out amazing they really look OEM/TRD
 
lol give me any pic requests and ill post it, just at my moms for mother day :banana: but tomorrow i will take lotsa pics for anyone looking to mount BLACK ones in a similar fashion. ill give a walk through of it all and supplies needed.

as for the center caps, take a small (model size paint) brush and get any sort of red paint, preferably something that adheres to plastic/paint. Make sure to put it on in abundance with a brush just slightly wider than the dip/valley from the logo. Then keep a towel and fingers handy and wipe the excess pain away every brush or two. Your first will look like sh*t then you will get the hang of it, trust me.

Monda i wil slap some paint on the flaps, and as for the metal plates ill keep any eye on them but dont forget i dont live in colorado :) winters are mild summers here and summers are mild springs.

Hey JC12, I've been looking for some DIY projects and mud flaps as well. I'd like more detail on how you did this, if you don't mind. I want black mud flaps with aluminum strips. I'm working 80 hours a week for the next 2-3 weeks, so I'm feeling somewhat lazy on the research end. BTW, I called Susquehanna Motorsports. They charge 20$ for a 12"x18" urethane square. With shipping, the total comes to over 100$ for just the plastic. The guy said its heavy-duty stuff that holds its color for 15-20 years. But I've recently spent over 5000$ in maintenance and upgrades, so I'm trying to save money wherever possible, especially on stuff I can actually do. Thanks in advance for any info.

okay so i see you live in cali, you guys have ikea.. right? haha i dont want to look like a fool. Assuming you do if you want to go CHEAP go there.. however at my ikea they only have red and green colors.. i used cutting boards for the flaps.. the urethane squares would be much better quality but this part is up to you. I am sure you can find cheaper plastic sheets somewhere online, or get some from an auto store for 50 bucks. after you have the flaps cut the tops similar to how i did or JAOS are cut. i still have to find out what the bolts i used are because they are similar to rivets and look super clean.. but it was the first time i used or saw them. you get 4 feet of metal (your choice) and cut them down to one feet, i used my angle grinder with a cutting disk. then line all 4 flaps up and clamp or bolt on one of the metal strips which has been cut to size. Take your drill and match the drill bit the the size of holes in your metal strip and drill through all 4 flaps. after all this was put together i took the airplane cable and cut it two about 9 inches. I made a loop at each end and clamped it then put a screw through one end and drilled it into my bumper and rocker panel. take the other end and attach it to the bottom of the flap using one of the special bolts i mentioned before which i still need to find the name for :)

sorry this is super scrambled i am just running out the door so ill revamp it tomorrow or feel free to message me with more specific questions or photo requests

But how did you fix the string to the bumper and rocker? Also did you ever find what kind of bolts you used for the metal portion? And last question is did you just screw the boards to the fender well lining?

There is a hole in the factory bumper in about that location. I bet he integrated that somehow. Other wise just drill a hole anywhere, pretty simple. :shrug:
