What is the deal with adding mud flaps to a 2013 4runner with running boards?

I plan to install Ionic CXV running boards on my newly acquired 4runner. But a lot of the mud flaps websites say they are not compatable with 4runners that have running boards! why? is there a solution?

Hi Clacquam,

The reason is that the stock running boards/mud flaps are "Modular" and are built having a "Transition molding" affixed to the part of board that attaches to the mud flap on the fender. There may be an 'End-cap kit' available (from toyota) to replace the transition molding for trucks w/o mud flaps! If so, an aftermarket mudflap can then be used. rgds!
