Muffler Mistake

I have a dynaflow on my 97 I think it's a good sound. Tried magnaflow a few times and didn't like them to loud

Sounds great in person. A camera can never really capture the sounds different mufflers make - the only real way to compare sounds would be to have a group of people together with every possible exhaust thats been installed thus far and listen to them back to back. But since that's nearly impossible, what a camera captures is what we rely on. Here's an outside video of the exhaust too, it is a bit windy in the video, and this was the day after the system was installed (it's actually gotten deeper than this video suggests since then):

i like my 14" magna flow, but i crushed it with a big rock a few weeks ago... It sits aboue the framerail... but somehow i still managed to get some descent rock rash on it. My dad said my truck sounds like a "gay motorcycle" i really dont care, it sounded better before the rock rash mod. If i had to do it over I think an 18" would be nice, or even a 22"-24" for a quiet sound

I went with the Magnaflow 18' and am I sorry. Granted I'm old so my ears might be messed up, but I hate the sound, It's not just loud, loud I could deal with but it make's my runner sound like a hopped up civic

What should I do next?

Hate it, hate it!

I think I'll rip it off, and install something else, ideas?

Magnaflow 24"? etc

Help?

cant go wrong with flow-master, good old american steel promise to eliminate all rice relate sounds :cowboy:

I am surprised you didn't like your 18" MagnaFlow. I am an old guy too, and I really like mine. Not too loud, but loud enough. I would try the 24" if I were you.

I don't see how they can sound similar. That 5.7L V8 is a beast. The sound from a V6 is much different than a V8. That's the biggest problem in making ours sound good.

You are correct. Obviously they do not sound the same. I actually misspoke, what I meant to say is that it has the same deep throaty sound of its much larger brother. Sounds very similar not ricey at all. I listened to tons of youtube vids etc that had very ricey sounding systems on their 4runners. Thats actually why I spent the extra. I really did not want to spend the extra money but the result is a very nice hearty sound from my exhaust that although not as deep as the Tundra has very similar characteristics.

That system does sound pretty good, but comes with a big price as you said.

The flowmaster mufflers take care of the civic sounding ricer! i haved one on my 2.7 runner and the 3.4 they kinda mellow out when just tooling down the road. But let you know they are there when you got your foot all up in it! But that just my $.02 worth!

I can confirm that the Tundra resonance silencer will solve the "drone" "highway humm" problem. I had one installed after it was recommended to me. I am very very happy. Awesome sound when revving it up or accelerating but no hwy drone at 60-70 mph.

I think i asked this b4 but could you possibly post a pic showing the placement of the resonator in the exhaust system. Also what the heck does it look like? I checked google and got some real messed up results.

Resonator on my TRD catback system is wrapped in bubble wrap here. Imagine a section of piping that's the same size and diameter of a tube of 3 tennis balls that is thrown into the system about a foot and a half from the exhaust exit. I'll get a better pic posted later.

I will post pic tomorrrow of my flowmaster with a tundra R silencer.

It should be between the muffler and exhaust tip.

Here is a pic of my setup: flowmaster with Tundra resonance silencer.

The tundra part is directly in line with the exit side of the muffler.

I did not install this setup, it was installed by the professionals at "The Truck Shop" in San Diego.

what about the drone at lower speeds? i think with my setup my drone is the most loud at around 30 to 40 MPH does this solve that problem?

you might want to address your universal joint and its contact with the gas tank skid. do you not hear it poppin on it at full flex?

RE: gas tank hitting. I think you are just seeing that in the picture angle. They do not appear to be touching when I looked under the vehicle. They are about 2-4 inches apart and I don't see why they would touch even when flexing unless I am not understanding your comment.

it looks bent up. just like mine was before i took my gas tank skid off and beat the S*** out of it. when you flex out all the way, it may be hitting. i would check.
