The part # of the V8 t-case is different than the V6. They are both the same 'series' but they are a bit different. Without looking it up again it's something like xxx-xxxx-xx-A vs. xxx-xxxx-xx-B. I would have to assume the mechanism that allows 2wd is missing in the V8's t-case.

Doesn't it come down to something fairly simple like it being the acuator?

An actuator disconnect the front and mechanically lock for the diff should do it.
