Multiple Spoilers?

After putting my RTT on and having to push it forward more than I'd like to, I've learned there are a couple different versions of the 4th Gen spoiler.

Are they interchangeable? I would love to just take it off, but then I would have two holes on the hatch, and no third brake light, since it's not actually cut out of the steel door, it's just an indentation.

I've seen on ebay there are quite a few "oem" (ebay oem and real oem seem to differ, haha) spoilers on there that look lower profile.

Has anyone else taken off their spoiler? If so, how does it look?

Here's the one I have

Can't answer your question about taking the spoiler off, but I might be able to shed a little light on the different spoilers. As best as I can determine, the difference is factory installed vs. dealer installed. You have what I believe to be the factory installed spoiler. I have the "flatter" spoiler and I know for a fact that it was dealer installed.

Why?? I think the spoiler looks good! Lucky you 4runamoc I wanted to put a spoiler on my 4th gen. I've done some research and there is a small selection that you can choose from to buy aftermarket. And as far as I know, the spoiler is just attached by a few screws into the metal body and wired with the light as follows - not too much work in my opinion

As far as I know there are two spoiler options for the fourth generation: one with the flatter look as mentioned above, and another with a sort of wind scoop designed to grab air flowing over the roof and re-direct it down across the rear window.

I've got the spoiler with the wind scoop and while it isn't perfect, it definitely does create a downdraft across the window which will blow rain and other debris off if you maintain highway speeds. That said, the rear wiper sort of negates the need for this...

The spoilers on Sport Editions are the slim ones. SR5's and Limiteds got the fat one. I think. There's a TSB or similar type of document out there that describes the two versions, but I can't remember where I saw it.

I have the "fat" or "hump-backed" spoiler on my sport edition, so I do not think this is correct.

Pretty sure 03-05 got the slim spoiler and 06-09 got the humped one. I think they share the same mounting points so you could easily switch out yours for one from an 03-05

Like I said above, I have an 05 sport edition with a factory installed hump backed spoiler, so I don't think this is right either.

I think all factory installed spoilers are hump backed, while some dealer-installed spoilers are the flatter ones, as mentioned earlier in the thread. Can't confirm mounting points though.

Troymclure is correct. I have an 03 with the slim spoiler. I really like the humped ones and the dealer told me they are interchangeable. My sister had a 04 with the slim spoiler as well. The 2005 model is when they changed the style.

Ummm ... unless you're specifically referring to the factory spoiler, no. I have a 2006 sport with a dealer installed spoiler that is the flat version. I know it's dealer installed because I'm the original owner ...

Interesting that they are interchangeable. Mine is scratched up from years of hitting my roof box, skis, kayaks, ladder, basically anything strapped to the roof rack. I think the flatter one might give some more clearance.

what's the MFR date on your 2006?

Not really sure ... don't know how to determine that, but I know the delivery date is listed as 1/1/06

Looks like your 4runners MFR date must of been in 2005, which would explain why you have the flat spoiler. You can also check the drivers door jam to view the MFR date.

Well yes I am referring to factory spoilers. You most likely have the slim one that the dealer installed, but the part came from an 03-05 and they just put it on an 06.

Maybe so ... like I've said previously, mine was dealer installed, but I purchased it in April of '06. Speculation on my part about the dealer installed vs. factory installed spoilers based on empirical evidence, but I could easily be wrong. Maybe they did install an '05 on my rig ...

I found the info sheet that I was trying to recall regarding the two factory spoiler options for the 08 & 09 models . It's the Urban Runner package that gets the factory slim style spoiler.
