KDSS is a MUST in my book even if you do not plan on doing a lot of off-roading.
Ordered ours last week. Optioned with the premium pack only. Gave us most everything we wanted beyond the base trail. Hope that softex seating lasts like the cloth has in our 97. Would have added rigid running boards too but there is a supply issue with them. Could have held up production for an unknown amount of time. Did not get kdss, I have a rigged JKU Wrangler for my off road vehicle. Just want 4wd for those iffy situations. Will get an aftermarket set of cargo crossbars for better carry capabilities.
If you live where it snows, most of the Trail 4Runnners Toyota is allocating to these regions have KDSS. We get next to no snow in the Gulf States Region so Toyota doesn't allocate any of the KDSS-equipped rigs to the area.

How does KDSS help in the snow?
A center diff option would be much more helpful in the snow states then KDSS.
4x4's are the hot sellers in areas where it snows. People either want/need the KDSS in these areas or Toyota and the dealers know the 4x4's are going to sell so why not add KDSS to them all and increase their profits.
You got the mountains so you're in a KDSS region.
Toyota sends the KDSS 4Runners to the places with mountains and/or snow apparently.

I like the way my TE w/kdss handles on the street much better than my 3rd gen. Driving the same corners/roads the is quite a noticeable difference in handling. Hands down, stock, it way out performs it off-road too.
I guess it really depends on what your future plans are. I have read a lot of posts/threads that say if you are planning on any large suspension upgrades, ones that are greater than +3", you should not get kdss.
I have only had mine for 4 months but here is my take on the extras. I bought the Nav/Entune system and received remote start as part of the deal. The Nav is okay. Entune is okay. The remote start is okay. LOL I'll explain they are not great, just okay. The nav, apart, from a periodical $200 map upgrade (may or may not need it depending on where you live), is fine. Entune can be flaky with certain phones (which most 3rd party head-units can be too) The remote start shuts off when you unlock the doors BUT it is factory wired so there wasn't someone hacking your wire harnesses and breaking your interior trim to install it.
Apart from a few small issues, that I won't loose sleep over, I am extremely happy with it.

Pros: It slides (no kidding), makes it a whole lot easier loading up heavy and awkward shaped cargo!, makes the rear cargo area completely flat when the 2nd row is folded down.
Cons: takes up cargo space due to raise floor height, no real tie downs that moves along with the tray, crap falls behind/under the tray, might rattle over time?

SE states Toyota sells plenty of Trail Editions with KDSS. When I was shopping, most of the Premium versions all had KDSS. And no, it doesn't snow here in South Florida

NC has mountains and snow. they're in your region.
I don't make the rules, Toyota does and for some reason they seem to think the Gulf States Region doesn't need KDSS.
The above is absolutely true for the 4th Generation also. I had a 2009 Sport Edition with the XREAS suspension which was a terrific handling vehicle, yet the KDSS is noticeably better.

I have been trying to figure out what to do to upgrade suspension of my 4W drive 2012 SR5.
It was suggested by a member to drive the XREAS and the KDSS.
One of the two local dealers had a 2014 Limited with XREAS. Vehicle was 2W drive and had a sunroof. The other dealer had a 2014 TE with 4W drive and all the options you can imagine, even decent Bridgestone tires.
My impressions are as follows:
1-Not a substantial difference in nosedive, on SR5 and XREAS Both vehicles were driven fast enough to the point the ABS kicked in on hard braking. I suspect the spring rates of both vehicles are the same.
The KDSS had much less nosedive but it was still present, maybe if it’s shocks had better damping abilities the dive would seem more like a slight dip.
2-Driving as hard and fast as I felt comfortable on cloverleaf ramps I would say the XREAS was a little more stable. This may be due to lack of extra weight of the 4W drive parts associated with the SR5. It may be related to different shocks on the XREAS which if I had to guess have better compression and rebound characteristics than on my SR5.
3—The KDSS was substantially more stable when pushed on a cloverleaf entrance or off ramp. The sales guy grabbed the door bolster or whatever it’s called when I did not brake until I hit the apex of an off ramp and then applied a little accelerator to exit ramp with the vehicle behaving very well, in other words no drama.
I’d be satisfied if mine handled like that. Only thing I’d change if possible on the KDSS would be the shock. Even with the slight nose dive I think better damping would really make the handling great.
