Sweet! What tools are you going to use to take off frame rust? Or are you just gonna cut the old mental out and weld in new metal?

Depends how bad it is. I'll be using a plasma cutter to remove the rear LCA brackets, and a grinder to smooth it out. I'll most likely use a plasma cutter for removing any metal since it'll make fast work of it. If I can leave sections I'll use a wire wheel and wire brush to clean it. I also have some aerospace strip that I can use to remove anything.

From my personal experience for any of the stuff you don't want to cut id suggest a grinder. My rust laughs at my wire brushes.

I'll be using Eastwood as well. I plan on blowing out the frame rails while I have them cut open to clean on the debris. Then I'll paint the inside of the rails with their frame coating as well.

I just want this thing to be clean again. We're getting a 4th Gen soon, and I don't want this being the ugly step-child.

The fat gen 4Runner will forever be the ugly step-child of all 4runners. That thing is god awful imo. It's too round and soccer mom-ish. It's a good car to take kids to practice and around town in don't get me wrong but for an Offroading rig haha it's a joke visually and in some parts physically with its horrible clearance (stock). I probably just pissed a lot of people off but I'm not bashing, don't worry about your runner it'll always look better than its younger brother.

There's holes in the frame that are already existing that I hoped to use to remedy that.

The 4ths have a fat butt that I don't like. I guess it's just the transition from mean off-road machine to the soccer mom-esque, people hauler that I don't like. I don't like the 5ths much either except the new 2015 and soon to be mean look. I saw somewhere that they were supposed to come in a desert tan and gunmetal color, but I could be misinformed.
 
Curious as to where the most common places rust is to form on these frames. My 4Runner was originally owned by my mother since new and its been in NJ all its life. I did a thorough rust clean up on the frame over the summer and noticed just a lot of surface rust, nothing serious.

I have plenty of pictures if anyone is curious to see what a T4R frame looks like from NJ. Granted it was garaged kept most of its life but was always taken care of.

Looking forward to the results MStudt.
 
A arm mounts, crossmember attachment points, rear bumper, pretty much anywhere something mounts to the frame is going to be more succeptable to rust

I would love to, but I just don't have time right now. I'll have an extra pair now though, and I'll be able to build a jig at least. I need to come up with a design, and source something for an LBJ.

Do you still have your old front UCA's?
 
Been making some progress with obtaining some good used OEM parts. I need to get some new CV's, UBJ's, order custom front brake lines, and possibly new front calipers. After those remaining parts I'll be able to start rebuilding.

I was going to redo the LBJ's since everything was apart. I think I'm going to hold off on this since they were just replaced about 20k miles ago.
 
Somehow I didn't see the last couple posts here. Glad you pm'd me about the ucas. If you've got 4runner calipers I've got my old ones too. Left over from my tbu.
