My 05 just hit 253K!

The point I was making is that rust is still a significant problem for salt-use regions. It is far for being a non-issue.

Whether a flaw in rust protection or not, Toyota did not offer any such replacement or buy-back option in any but salt-use states. The reason being, it was a non-issue and there are plenty of Tacos out there in salt-free states with no frame issues at all. There is also a problem with the Tundras and corrosion; and now people's spare tires are falling off.

This is a Toyota forum and Toyota has clearly been having problems with rust in the salt-use states in the last 20 years.

And that's just WRONG...Sorry..but here in NH and even REAL SNOW COUNTRY in Upstate NY...Toyota replaced the frames for FREE.

While vehicles still rust here...the statement that I objected to was that vehicles rust out before the engine wears out...Again that is just plain WRONG. Vehicles do rust..but at a significantly slower rate then vehicles just 30 years ago. And the engine will wear out before the vehicle is too rusted to drive. I see examples of 20+ yo cars driving around NH all the time. Most have little rust.

did you read what I said Mike ? Toyota replaced frames in states that use salt .... NH and NY are both in that category...

Lets just let it go; cars still rust, some worse than others and all cars in salt-use states rust worse than cars that live in states that do not use salt on their roads.

'nuff said.
 
So the days of when you could see the ground through the rust holes in the floor board are a thing of the past :jump:
 
Very optimistic trend.
I faced seized front calipers (twice),blown headgasket, bushing changing on my 135k 2004 4runner. Still have to change some bushings.
So I'm not so fortunate :ohwell:
 
If you drive on any salt/sand applied street/highway in the winter,it's a must when the Temp. gets above 32f that you get out the hose and wash underneath your Auto or Truck.
I sold a 33 year old Ford Truck this year, driven every winter on salt/sand applied street/highways, but washed after it was above freezing.

Just sold it and the buyer said he was taken back that their was zero signs of any rust on under carriage or on any other part of it's body.
 
Wow 250+K miles

I'm going to quit worrying about my front wheel bearings and these serpentine belt rollers or alternator until whatever is whining gives up completely.
 
Got my 06 V8 Sport with 107k just last year, hit 120k last week, had the Timing belt done and hoping to get another 120k before I do it again
 
I haven't done too much, really. Regular maintenance, oil changes, etc. The only real repairs have been the altenator, a couple of sensors, an ignition coil and master cylinder.
 
done some repairs,and have 150,200 miles and decided to keep it for another 150 full timing belt and right axle done , and ball joint, one major repair was the power steering,and rear caliper , but I am going to use it for off road so the build begins, can someone tell me how to make these pics smaller?

Wow, that is great. My 2005 V8 has around 118,000 and given my inability to spend any more money or take on another payment, I'm keeping it for a while. If it goes to 200K (which will take me 5 years) without any major issues, I'll be happy.
 
Just wanted to update everybody. My beloved 05 V6 Sport finally gave up the ghost at 344,000 miles. Even in death she was kind enough not to strand me. She went into limp mode and dutifully delivered me and my 2 year old safe and sound to my brother's house. The post mortem? Cylinder #1 internal failure. My heart wanted to replace the engine. Sadly, my brain intervened with the reality of spending $3K on a vehicle with 344,000 miles. Sigh. I sold her "as is" on Craigslist for $1800 in ten minutes flat. In 344,000 miles, aside from wear and tear items, she required only a sensor, a catalytic converter, a brake master cylinder and an alternator. I'll forever miss you, old girl.

The good news? I went out and found a beautiful 07 Limited with 134,000 miles. I paid $10,700 cash and figure she's good for another 200K!

It's awesome that you would report back after 3 1/2 years and with only 4 previous posts.

I'll bet few people have ever bought a used 4th gen with more confidence or peace of mind.

Pretty good run! With all the high mileage examples running around here, I always wonder what goes when they finally "gave up the ghost" as you put it.

When you say cylinder #1 failure, what do you mean exactly? What physically happened and how did you come to that conclusion?

Yah, I haven't been terribly active on here. Mostly owing to the fact that I'm now a business owner and a single Dad with a two year old. However, buying another 4Runner has sort of reinvigorated my interest in all things 4Runner.

As a matter of fact, as I type, I'm waiting on the installation of a Daystar 2.5/1.5" spacer lift. Picking her up in a few hours. I'll post some pics later tonight!

As far as the death of my old runner, she suddenly went into limp mode. My mechanic brought down his scan tool and read a cylinder #1 failure. Hoping it was simple, we first tried replacing the coil. No luck. Ruled out a couple of other things which meant that the issue was internal. Rather than spending time and money on such a high mileage engine, I decided to sell it.

My old one had been paid off for 8 years. Accordingly, I didn't want payments. Knowing how long they last, I set my sites on paying cash for another one with 100Kish miles. I got an 07 Limited, silver. It's love all over again. Only this time, I'm planning a "mild" build. Making her better off road is the goal but so is maintaining drivability. Already upgraded the tires, the Daystar is in progress, and I plan to add a killer stereo, alarm, remote start, LED light bars, exhaust, aftermarket roof rack, upgraded battery, that's as far as I've gotten but more is coming!

I just did the 2.5/1.5 Daystar and I love it. Just note that you won't be able to get much more than 2* positive caster with the stock upper control arms after the lift. It doesn't bother me, but some people don't like the steering feel on the highway with only 2* caster.

Regarding the limp mode... I once had a similar experience with a 1996 Mustang Cobra DOHC. I had similar symptoms as you with the cylinder failing (#2). I noticed that the spark plug was fouled up with oil and the engine was missing. I replaced the plug, plug wire, coil... didn't help. I was certain it was a cylinder problem. I sold the car for a big loss.

The new owner called me a few weeks later and told me that it turned out to be a bad injector (ugh)!
