Cranks but no start ... guess we should install all the nightmarish vacuum lines before trying next time.

Got the beast running today!
We have a couple issues though.
We drove the truck with no exhaust piping hooked up and it ran ok. A little underpowered, slow but ran ok.
We hooked up the exhaust down pipe before the cat and now it runs HORRIBLE. Super slow, max speed of 20 MPH. We're thinking it's a clogged catalytic converter?
No check engine lights yet, all seems ok other than the complete loss of power after we hooked up the exhaust. What do you all think? Replace the cat? Remember, the car was originally down for the count due to a blown head gasket. I've been reading and a blown HG can cause a cat to fail.
I just want to make sure before I go out and buy a new one. There could also be other issues but I'm trying to narrow it down before hand. TPS? MAF sensor? o2 sensors? Or should I just buy the cat?

Nice thread. Very interesting. It sucked that you ended up having to buy a new motor after putting in the work on the old one.
As for your new issue take the CAT off the exhaust and look through it with light on the other side. If you cant see the light then its defiantly clogged.
Or you can be like me and just weld up an interchangeable test pipe and see if that helps. (after I did this, the modifying never stopped :wacko

I just bought a new one today - screw it haha. I'm almost positive it's a bad cat, if not I can work on to the MAF (or equivalent), the TPS or the 02 sensors, etc. The mods will start after I get it smogged :rockon:
Right?? At least everything on this beast is new. New engine, trans was redone right before the head gasket blew, all the hoses we could find that were bad have been replaced. Just need a couple more things and it will be better than it's ever been. I'll post some pics up soon :nod:

This was our 'shop' location, my grandparents ranch. Couldn't ask for better views and some nice days / nights up there

Haha, yeah - I will be doing extensive R&D before I take it too far. Short trips, at idle, making sure everything is good. We moved it up there just because my dads driveway didn't have enough room.
Almost there! The new catalytic converter comes in on Friday, I need a couple of vacuum lines for the power steering, at the moment I'm running on 4 out of 6 torque converter bolts (the last 2 were too small for some reason?) and I need one of the nuts for the thermostat housing. That's pretty much it! I have my moving permit in hand and I just need a smog after
