My 1997 SR5 build and repair thread

This is a bad diode on the positive plate second phase in from the battery post.

Of note is a shorted diode will beep continuously using the diode checker just like touching both leads together.

This bridge has a bad plus diode and explains the low whine and the fact that it won't putout enough amps at idle to maintain the headlights. Its output capacity is reduced by 1/3 across the board.

For those following along the rectifier part number from Toyota is 27357-63020.

Denso # 021580-2610
Aftermarket # 77904000p
Aftermarket# INR720p

Unit part number: (Alternator PN)
Toyota 27060-62180
Denso 101211-4132

This OEM unit has the 6mm battery connection and a tab for ground plate. I'll most likely order the 77904000p for around 30 dollars. There is a 77904000a that doesn't have the ground tab. (The hole on the negative plate my meter lead is going through)

Edit: I ordered the 7790-4000P it will be here by Thursday.

Well, my rectifier arrived today. Biggy fail.

It has the grounding tab I need but no hole on the lower plate for the ground post to go through.

I'm guessing I'm returning it and look for a tab plus notch in the lower plate. All though half of me wants to modify the lower plate for the aluminum post.

Alternator is all back together will test after inspection in 2 weeks.

Got my radio 28pin connector wires to insert into the reverse and VSS positions of the plug to finally install the 2013 Corolla NAV/Entune radio.

It's time to start the radio install. The brackets to mount in the 97 that I already modified for the Scion T1819 may need additional tweaking. Good thing I have a spare set.

It's in. It needs spaced out an 1/8" yet

Also need to hook up the VSS wire.

I was having an issue inserting the backup wire into the plug. The VSS wire (Pink) was already present in the adapter CH harness so I just cut it and soldered a wire to it to run over to the PCM area.

Today I updated entune to version 5 from version 2. It was simple.

Download update to a USB stick and Insert it in the audio USB port. The radio detected the update and started the process. Took around 5min. The radio continued to play the entire time it was updating.

I found the leak thanks to my significant other. She pointed out antifreeze on the valve cover under the throttle body.

The short little line from the intake to the throttle body split.

This is a very handy tool to reach those buried hose clamps.

haha I'm re-doing the fuel injectors on mine (again!) and tore that same hose. When you were explaining it I was like "yep, I think I know exactly where that leak is."

drips the same exact way for me. I thought I was shooting out some fuel from these cheap ebay injectors! Hope I can get my 4runner working soon like yours. Keeping the 96 alive!

My charge port shit the bed yesterday. Time for another or something different. I

Like the round ones I put in the rear ashtray area of the 97 Limited Puppy Hauler using a members adapter plate. May be that is my next step. The puppy hauler had a similar USB charger in same location and the 2.1a charge port died also.

Speed wire (VSS) is connected to radio for NAV.

I'd post a picture but for some reason it's not working.

My NAV is not acting like the VSS is connected.

I found some diagnostic displays and it shows no speed while driving. Also looks like the ignition and parking brake should be working.

More searching....I swear I hooked the VSS wire to the proper pin of the 28 pin connector on the radio.

So the other 97 4Runner I'm responsible for has been needing coolant in the overflow tank on occasion since it was purchased. Now of late is been concerning me at how often it needed topped off.

Worrying it's a head gasket I started first looking for leaks. Ends up most all the hose clamps on the rear heater core and heat valve were wet with antifreeze. Since the lower hose clamps down on the block are such a pain to get to I discovered the factory constant tension clamps are still available. I'll buy 2 sets one for my SR5 and one for the puppy hauler. I'm on the shelf on getting the hoses from napa or the dealer. But I'm eliminating the rear heater T's because they were rusting under the hose and were the main source of leaks/weeps.

Switch the VSS input over to the signal from the ABS ECU and I now have a speed reference on the diagnostic screen. The KM/H is only off 1 to 2. I'll drive around and make sure it behaves now, then think about updating the maps. It's 170 dollars.

Edit: the diagnostic screens are in kilometers not miles per hour.

I ordered all the clamps and hoses required to bypass the two Tees since those were most of my problem and the rear heater lines are rusted through and bypassed.

121 dollars. The two hoses were most of the bill.

The AC hasn't been performing to spec and before I hook the gauges up I put the new clutch drive cooling fan on from the 97 Puppy hauler since the engine is apart for head gaskets.

The AC got cold enough to make my fingers hurt with a outside temp of upper 70's.

So, for anyone not playing along, I just got finished with the head gasket job on the puppy hauler.

My 97 has the odd ruff start up with the typical water vapor in the exhaust and coolant loss in the expansion tank. It's going to piss me off if I'm going to end up replacing the head gaskets on my SR5.

Only closure is it will be done and it's fresh in my memory. I ought to just do it and be done with it. I know what needs done.

I changed oil and discovered the fuel line I used for the PCV tweaked my gromet in the valve cover and cut it in half. I put my spare molded PCV hose on and replaced the grommet.

Put some injector cleaner in and will pay attention to the coolant level. My rad cap may be bad too it's not making pressure when up to temp.

I'll do an oil analysis at the end of this OCI and if it shows antifreeze it's time.

Not good on a hot summer day. You could hear the dead cylinder picking up. As soon as the idle smoothed out and idle started dropping the water vapor showed up.

I'm sorry man. I hope you keep up with the updates and keep it going. I know I don't comment often but I really enjoy the attention to detail and the updates.

This afternoon I put a new rad cap on and fired it up. While standing at the tail pipe listening to the tail pipe and the miss I thought I heard the snap of spark jumping at the engine. Till I got there to look the miss went away.

I drove it to work tonight. I'll go out after midnight with a friend and fire it up and look for a spark in the dark.
