My 2003 4Runner - Intermittent Wiper Switch Repair...

New owner of a 1999 Sr5. Wipers don't work, but they work whenever I spray the windshield for bugs. is this the right fix for this? Also how do you get the column apart. Got the bottom screw and the two side screws that face towards steering wheels and it dems like something else is holding it together. Thanks for your reply.

Hi...I really don't know if this would be the same relay issue or not. Mine was done on a 4th-generation 4Runner, so I'm guessing it might be a little different. Also, with my issue, the wipers were completely dead, so NOT working on a spray either.

As for how to get the column apart...I can't even remember, as I did this about 5 years ago. But, might also be different than the 4th-generations. I would suggest a Google or YouTube search. I'm sure something should come up. Good luck!!

Actually, I meant a search on how to get the column apart.

Yeah that's my thought. I knew they didn't work when I bought it. Didn't worry about it since I like in ever-drought-stricken Texas. But of course the first week it rained three days and expecting a few more at the end of the week. Can't find a relay anywhere else and the whole switch arm is $120-$130. Found this and thought it would be worth looking into. Even if it's a different relay, at least I can use the idea to get me going down a track to fixing it. Worst case is Amazon will 2nd day ship me a switch for $130.

Mouser currently shows the relay as 'obsolete' and doesn't have any in stock. Has anyone found a suitable replacement or bought from other sources?

just wanted to say thanks for posting this!

was driving through the snow a few days ago and had a bunch of snow fall on the windshield while driving with the intermittent wipers on

same symptoms as everyone else where the wipers only work on low and high and stop in the middle of the windshield when turned off

parts ordered from digikey, will replace this weekend

My wife totaled my 2003 4Runner, so sadly don't have it any longer.
She was fine (no injuries...just scared)...as she spun out on the ice.
I now have a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser and love it!!
Just glad to see this little repair hack is still helping people out!! :banana:

fixed! thanks again! sorry to hear about the 4runner

took 15 minutes or so to desolder with my cheap amazon desoldering pump but otherwise no issues at all

i would like to say that the relay has been replaced at digikey with part number JJM1-12V as a replacement, shows up on the page from your link

seems to work perfectly fine - no issues that i can see

I doubt you find it at either or any auto parts stores, it not really an auto part as much as it's an internal piece/part/electrical component to an auto part.

Now-a-days auto parts stores only sell complete assemblies and in this case the complete switch is probably a "dealer only" part.

Worked for my 2000 4Runner

Thank you for a great article and instructions. I just did the wiper relay swap on my 2000 4Runner and it worked like a charm. Total investment: $6. $3 for the relay and $3 for some desolder wick. I noted that the new relay is not totally silent but in a wierd way I like to hear the little click as a reminder that I was able to fix it! Thank you very much, you just saved me at least $120 or double that to have my dealer do it.
