what a painfully familiar story! I have the same thing here on my 06 sr5 v6, 95K. Tired of struggling with dealers and mechanics saying "you car is perfectly fine" even after driving it. Did you finally find a solution? I am thinking of chaning tires (I got separate ones on front and rear axles, rear ones are almost flat - the way I bought it in March 2010), then changing the rear shocks. I hope I will not have to change the front struts as it is more complicated for me. One mechanic just looked at it today - I was told I should replace the rear lower control arms as they may add to the problem as well as the rear shocks - they are sweating, not leaking but I guess this is enough to spoil your life.
What is different in my situation though - I used to drive perfectly (except for a little bumpy ride in the back) until about 3 weeks ago - I got to a deep pothole covered with rain water and then noticed that the car is what I call "dancing" over the bumps on highways or even on the relatively flat surface on speed as if it were windy. That's why I thought it may be the rear shocks.
Also, I even jumped while standing on the rear bumper to see if they are dead - nothing happened, the truck stood still withouht swaying. I don't know what to do. I have 265/65/17 almost new Yoko Geolander HTS on front and almost dead Michelins in the rear. But again, it happened just overnight and it was driving ok before. I thought of trading it in and even test drove a new 2.7 FWD highlander yesterday (I can't afford anything more expensive if I can afford this at all though)). Well ,it is one class below the 4runner and I still think that my 4runner runs better even with these problems, I just don't wanna suffer this funny feeling every time when going over 50 mph.
BTW, I disconnected the battery just in case - to erase all the bad habits my 4runner's artificial intellect might have learnt from my driving style. It kinda improved the steering behavior but I really can't clearly explain how. It might have been TRAC or VCS or something. It is better but far from perfect or at least acceptable.
Pls share your current situation? Also, did you have any problems with engaging or disengaging your front axle? Cause earlier at that day when I got into that pothole I had some problems with it, but I am not describing them here because not sure if they are related. Thanks!
