My 4Runner Threw a ROD! *pics*

Buy the $975 engine and swap it in your self(one weekend with engine hoist, friends, beer). Then keep or sell her.

I have purchased tons of engines from salvage yards and usually they have a 3-6 month warranty. If somethings gonna happen its usually pretty quick to surface.

You might be able to get $ for the old heads if their not damaged too badly. Someone on here might want to port and polish.

I'm purchasing the the motor for $970, w/ 122K on the OD, this week . I'm also purchasing all the needed maintenance parts that need to be replaced at this time:

Timing Belt
Drive Belts
Water Pump
Rear Main Seal
T-Stat
Plugs & Wires
Tensioner
Oil Filter
And maybe a Full Gasket Kit. If I decide against a full kit, I'll definitely get the main gaskets I need.

I receive a discount on all parts purchased thru my local dealer (one advantage to buying so many toy parts over the years), so that's a plus.

Am I missing anything?

If you're in that deep you may as well do the full gasket kit. You may want to put new idler pulleys in too. They tend to get a little noisy right around that mileage. You know that if you're pulling the engine it would be easy to install headers. . .;):

Made up my mind, I'm going w/ the full gasket kit. :)

Thanks, forgot about the idler pulleys too.

Long story short, I myself will not be doing the install...local reputable guy is doing it for me instead. I'd KILL to be able to work with him and take photos along the way, but with my demanding schedule, it's just not going to be possible. My wife needs this 4Runner back yesterday, so time is of the essence.
 
wow, pretty hard failure right there. Mine threw a rod after being submerged, and drinking quite a bit of water, but even then, only 1 rod broke and I limped it home, and then drove it to my shop 20 miles away.

I had my new engine bought and installed by somebody else for 1400 total. The engine cost like 890$ had 120k on it. And was not cosmetically taken care of compared to my old one.

But none the less, I use all synthetics, and it runs just as good as my old one!

Btw, if you have basic engine logics, tools, and a engine hoist, its a pretty easy swap to do IMO.
 
Hey Rock how about seals for the front of the engine. I could be wrong but the cam shafts and the crank have oil seals too. At least the last V6 i changed the timing belt on last time needed them. Wasn't hard to do since I was that far in.

Ok, thus far, the Motor, 4Runner and all new parts for the motor (T-belt, Water Pump, yada, yada, yada) have all been delivered to the shop as of 10am this morning. The shop was in the middle of installing a Jasper motor (per customer's request) last Thursday. They were closed Friday and still working on the J motor as of today. However, mine's next in line.

This shop has come highly recommended by not only many friends of mine, but even the place I purchased the motor from. Plus this shop is only 5 miles from my house, which is nice.

So far I'm in it $1600 for both the motor and all needed parts.

Rock Slide, did you have a chance to check on those cargo cover brackets? No big deal if you didn't.
 
Update:

Shop pulled the stock motor out on Tuesday; Tore the replacement motor completely down on Wednesday; Installed all the new parts and seals on the motor and thoroughly cleaned it up inside and out; Finished installing yesterday. Shop owner (same guy how did the entire motor swap) drove it around all morning and said it purrs like a kitten and the AC is blowing snowballs.

Said if I have the slightest problem, all work is guaranteed and the motor comes w/ a 6 mon warranty. Will pick up the 4Runner this afternoon. I can't wait! :bigok:


They did look for the reason the old motor threw a rod, but could not reach a final verdict. Said that when they tore the stock motor down, there was so much catastrophic damage internally (probably b/c the vehicle was driven a 1/3 of a mile after having thrown the rod) that there was no conclusive evidence to the root of the problem. They seemed to think it was something that had just been building up over time and finally failed. Even said mine is the third 3.4L motor this year that they've had to replace due to a thrown rod. Yikes...

And I bet they all had Auburn tags!!!!
