My 4th Gen carpet replacement

In addition to a lot of maintenance items, one of the first things I undertook on my new (to me) 2005 4Runner SR5 was to replace the passenger area carpet. This didn’t start by choice, but when I found out where all the washer fluid that wasn’t getting to the rear window was going...under the passenger side carpet in front and rear.
Once I had half the carpet pulled out, saw that the pad was never going to dry out, and learned that I could get a replacement for about a hundred and a half, the project was on.

As you can see, before and after is pretty remarkable.

I decided to play in the mud this weekend and got a good dose into the carpet. I popped the edges up and ripped out as much of the padding as I could reach. I hosed everything out and pulled up the excess with the shop vac.

The way I like to play I have a feeling this won't be the last time I get some water/mud in the cab. I'm considering putting some of that sound dampening but that doesn't make getting the water out any easier. I wish the carpeting was actually porous so it would dry out. No such luck.

Option B is just to cut out most of the carpeting. I run the weather tech floor liners and they cover the vast majority of the floor anyway. Seems kind of a waste to hack some big holes though.

I wonder if this is an original though or has someone else left "part" of their carpet in place.

[MENTION=71457]bassmacka[/MENTION] posted the other day in another topic that he just ordered a complete vinyl replacement for his carpet..see his post quoted below, so that maybe an option for you as well, I looked on the site he ordered from but I couldn't find the option for vinyl, but since I've mentioned and quoted him here maybe he'll reply with more info on what he's doing and where he found the vinyl option on their website.

you will need to remove that black plastic piece for the new carpet. I have done this before. Its great to get that old dirty carpet out. Will you be adding sound deadening material. I can also say that Im done with carpet and I just ordered the vinyl replacement from stockinteriors for my current 4th gen. Its black and I will never have to deal with shitty carpet again! I should have it next week.

After reading this thread I went back and pulled the center console and the rest of the trim holding the carpet in place. The pressure washer blasted off most of the spongy backing material. I gave the "up" side a good cleaning too so it looks pretty good.

Now I'm considering what to do with respect to replacing that padding. I've got some leftover closed cell foam in the attic just taking up space. I've got a few days until the carpet dries out so I'll keep looking.

Thank you so much for posting this. I had several sunroof leakage issues last year and the smell is not going away so this is a project I'm about to undertake.

Could you tell a significant difference from adding the sound deadening?

did you still have some window washer fluid spraying on rear window or did it all just go to the floor?
