My 4x4 didn't engage on my TEP

You should be in 4wd before you get stuck. When you are stuck, at least one wheel will be spinning, so that will allow everything to line up and engage, without the vehicle going anywhere.

So you mean to tell me you've NEVER in your life accidentally got stuck in 2wd and needed 4wd to get out... you've never driven on grass or dirt that was muddier than you thought, never skidded off the road in a downpour and got stuck.

Yes, I know how 4wd systems work and how/when to use them. Always go by the "better safe than sorry" method. My post was more joking and satirical than serious. Funny story- Just had to loan my dad my truck while I was away on a trip. It snowed. Needless to say I got 3 calls from him trying to figure out how to get 4wd to engage. It's certainly an acquired touch.

Nope, I have All-Time 4WD so I don't have to worry about being in 2WD mode. :P

Also I find it funny people have such a difficult time with engaging the 4WD, the instructions are literally in front of your face (well maybe not if you're short) in a pocket on the Driver's side visor.

TL;DR - IMO what Jeremy556 said.

Yeah, you have to pull back on the transfer case lever like you got a pair, and, when the drive train is slack. So you are coasting, and not accelerating, maintaining speed (which means its not slack cuz wind resistance), or engine braking.

If I am going forward, I give the gas a slight push, let off, wait a split second, then pull back.

If I'm not moving, and nobody is behind me, piece of cake, put it in reverse, move the slightest back and pull, and it will slip right into 4HI. So if it snowed while you are at work and you are parked, will, there you go, perfect time.

This is for 2013 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition. Your transfer case should be the same.

Truth in advertising - I have never taken apart or serviced any transmission or transfer case. All I have managed to do was crawl under my 4Runner a few times and look over what is there. The last time I changed oil on a vehicle was probably 1997.
