Auto off headlights.

I swear before installing this sensor my 4Runner would buz / ring at me to turn off my headlights.

Now that ring is gone and the headlights turn off on their own.

Anyone else notice this or have I always had auto off head lights.

Interesting if it provided headlight Auto Off. I read a bunch on this mod but I have not heard anyone mention it. I would do the mod if it did.

If I use DRL’s they do shut off by themselves when I turn off the vehicle.

The headlights already go off automatically either after 2 pushes of the key fob door lock or 30 seconds after the key fob door lock is pressed once.

I guess I can quit turning them off myself when I turn off the car.

There is no chime/warning unless you try to lock the doors with the key fob and one is open.

Did this in my 19 ORP and it took about 2 minutes with one of those plastic panel removal tools. Didn’t scrape any of the plastic and popped the new one in. Works well. Thanks for the post OP!

So your premium did not have the sensor either??? I thought only the non-premium models are missing it...

So after installing my Alpine head unit, I figured that I didn't need this sensor anymore, but turns out that the gauges still dim when you flip on the headlights during the day which it never did before, I thought this was all tied through the head unit, so I learned something new

Finally got around to adding the missing wiring harness today. Since both the BCM and light sensor wiring harnesses were missing, I used a Remote Start T-Harness to add the pins to the BCM connector. The harness I used was iDatalink ADS-THR-TL7, which is meant for the Push-To-Start model (even though my vehicle uses the G Key), but the F9 T-Harness can be recycled from this kit.

Good news is that adding the sensor and wiring to a SR5 does function as expected; dash lights and navigation react to light changes.

So, anyone who's install didn't work, you might want to look and see if pins 20,21 and 22 are populated on the middle BCM plug (F9).

Next up... trying to add auto headlights.

I have a 2018 SR5P. The sensor had the wiring but it doesn't work so I need to do the harness.

A “sub thread” seems pretty useless? Just ask the question in here. Multiple people responded with how easy it was to remove the blank with several different tools. OP uses a plastic trim tool, dollars to donuts that’s what Toyota would use if they had to swap this out. I don’t see why doing this super simple modification needs a procedure from Toyota?

I’m sure you could take your 4Runner to the dealership and have them do it for you for a few hundred dollars if you’re that concerned about somehow messing your dash up?

I used a small plastic trim tool on mine. I placed a microfiber rag under the tool so as not to scratch the dash. After a few tries, it popped right out. Don't overthink this one.

That’s how people feel about someone trying to seriously over complicate such a simple thing.

If you’re worried, take it to the dealership, simple as that?

Taking out the dummy plug is very easy.
Now, if you need to remove the actual light sensor after installation, *that* will be a royal PIA.
The locking tabs are different and need to be depressed from under the dash to push out the sensor. Be sure to test your sensor before snapping it into place.
