On my 3rd day & it's cleaning up pretty good. I actually started it today ( just for a minute-blown head gasket ) i drained the chocolate milk yesterday and flushed some oil through, topped off with new oil, pulled the plugs @ hit each cyl. w/ MMO. Returned the plugs and got some oil cycling through the motor. I found a used, running 3.0 for $300 local but i gotta help pull it which is np. Monday i'm taking it to a mechanic that's going to do a dye test to tell me if the existing engine is worth repairing. Getting excited seeing it cleaned up a little.

Thank you Riff....the guy w/ the running motor has made me a deal i can't refuse on the whole wrecked 94 4runner.....$500 for the complete truck minus, windshield, interior, passenger doors and rear hatch. I'm still hoping for good news on the existing motor but it won't be such a big blow knowing i have one running, waiting. One thing i gotta figure out is how to make the 'courtesy light' ( small green light by the ignition switch ) cut off.....i've tried pushing each door button in manually while the other doors are shut....the one in my 93 truck cuts off rather fast upon shutting the door.....the previous owner put a speedometer cluster in...maybe wired it back wrong? IDK......

How about just taping over it?

The light being on doesn't bother me....it's the thought of it constantly drawing current from the battery. I intend to give the T4R to her at either xmas or our anniversary,
( Valentine's day ) pending the engine situation and funds between now and then. It could end up sitting for weeks on end b4 either of those days.....you're right on the taping it up though...just figured it'd be a simple changing of the wire.....realistically, i got way more to be concerned with than that tiny green light !!! Gonna be on pins and needles after dropping it off to the 'dye guy' monday morning !!!

Update

Got the call today, the engine in it is trash. On the good side, the guy with the motor is gonna sell me the whole wrecked 1994 4runner for $500, minus the interior, passenger doors & rear hatch. The motor in it has 169k with a new timing chain, all the running gear 4x4 stuff is in working order ( i have a 93 truck that all that would fit ), trans, wheels, brakes, x-fer case, window motors, glass, oh and a bonus, the seller agreed to throw in the windshield, which i was gonna have to go buy due to the one in it is cracked . So, i got a quote from a mechanic thru a friend, he will pull both motors and install the good one for $450, and possibly may want some barter work in the deal. That is by far the best news i've had today. More news as i get it........gotta go do some sewing and make some extra $$$$$

In waiting

Word was sent from the mechanic that he's gonna try to get the engine swap done this week, he's a mechanic FT so while i am in no hurry.....i'm dieing to hear the engine run in the 4R. Meanwhile, i've gathered a set of running boards from here at T4R, and scored a set of endcaps on ebay that matches the chrome wheel well trim. I'm pretty certain i'm gonna do a 2/3 carpet replace soon.

Thing's i plan to do over the next 60 days: sand, prime and spray paint the hood and possibly the small area in front of the sunroof opening. Possible bumper swap from the wrecked runner, windshield replace, auto antenna replace, and as the time gets nearer to give her away, put an immaculate wax job on it, also get the spare tire thing working and mounted. I've ordered this killer binder with a celtic cross on the cover that is gonna be the scrapbook of the project, with her name on the binder's edge. I have some med. blue headliner material so i'll probably do that too, jury's still out on that.

Will post pics/info when possible, i'm living vicariously through everyone else's projects for now.

Dancin the happy dance

Just got the call :frisky: the T4R is ready !!! I'm going tomorrow evening to pick it up, status so far is he had to use the clutch fan from the wrecked one ( possibly what made the prior engine blow the head gasket ) and also put new valve cover gaskets on, tightened a transmission line & topped the fluid off. Said he let it run a long time to check overheating and all was good. The bid was $450 and he only asked for an additional $20 for the gaskets. I'm gonna drop 5 dead presidents on him to show my appreciation for his work & taking care of me. He also said he wants to drive it before i get there......i'm just frikkin amped to hear it run !!!!:typing:

Pics coming once i get the running boards on !!!

:driving:

Awesome deal. Your mechanic hooked you up for sure. I'm out in Mathews so when you get her ready to go hit me up and we'll go wheeling.

Do you know which side the head gasket was blown? I may be needing a head for the '95 I had. It's my buddies now. Are y'all junking the old motor?

DD, i had a dye test done on the motor and the guy said it had been driven w/ the chocolate milk in it for quite some time apparently. I'd be reluctant to sell you any part of it, but you're welcome to come check it out. I can ask him which side it was, all i had asked prior was, is it fixable?...and he just lowered his head. I plan to keep anything not affected by the blown HG....starter- alt.- etc. Will do Hyde !!

I'm looking for the left bank head. I'm not positive we will need it but I have a suspicion the head is cracked. Were gonna pull it down this weekend and he's going to take the heads to get milled and all so they'll let us know what we got. Who did your engine swap?

Thanks Hyde....i didn't know that....

So, a small delay but good news ( i always try to look at the good ) the mech. said the trans. was leaking from a previously jerry rigged hose and he has gone to get the proper hose it needs. So, 1. he is awesome for looking out for me versus just handing it over and letting me find it. 2. He did confirm that the trans. HAS BEEN REBUILT. The original CL ad said that, but that doesn't always mean it's so. Still going to go get it tonight so i hear.......waiting.....

Was great hearing it run !!! We left it on the trailer so i can pressure wash it tomorrow morning. The exhaust is a little loud, cat w/ no muffler, but around the front...the motor was purring. He said he's let it run for two hours to check for any overheating. He mentioned he thought the oil pressure gauge ( stock...the little needle ) was very low on idling, i told him the 2 yota's i've ever had were like that and the pressure came up when the throttle was pressed, he just mentioned maybe checking the oil sending unit to be sure.

I'm gonna drive it up & down a gravel road tomorrow once i'm done working on it, should be able to get the running boards on after pressure washing it. Also gonna give her an oil change, gonna check out the 4wd.....i'm just excited to hear it running.....for now, pics tomorrow.

Does anyone suggest 10w30 over 10w40 w/ the winter coming? Or any certain brand they prefer? I use Castrol on most of my rides, figured i'd ask here.

So i went with Mobil 1 high mileage oil, i pressure washed the bottom, omg there was like an entire town worth of mud and clay underneath. My friend who's been helping me w/ all the trailering, as well as turning me onto his nephew ( the mech. that swapped motors ) evened off the tire air press. and checked some random stuff while i was underneath.

I started on the running boards and got 4 of the 6 brackets on before we had to go get the windshield installed in Hampton. Afterwards, the tech locked the doors and the door key was inside lol, hour and a half later, after they called a locksmith, gave us both $25 gift cards, and we were up and gone. Toyota's apparently suck to break into !!

I've been driving on and off the trailer since lastnight....that sob is loud lol.....i gotta get a muffler on there, any muffler suggestions? in line preferred but not necessary. So i took it up the gravel road a little, checked the 4wd, all good.
The only thing that sticks out is the rear window wiper has some play in it and moves slow ( motor?/linkage?) The a/c works, motor starts right up, doesn't falter or fade, the throttle return spring feels way strong lol. I'm excited to have the motor running, and knowing mostly everything in functioning.

Tomorrow after work ( work always gettin' in the way ) i'm gonna have to drill 1 new hole per bracket, for the running board brackets to stay level. Small price to pay to be mixing and matching diff. years running gear. Thinking about using a black stainless metal screw w/ a trim washer on the head, to secure the end caps to the actual board......the holes for the wheel well line up but the seam where the end caps meet the boards will have to be pulled and screwed into place.

Was too dark for pics, i'll take pics as soon as i get the running boards straight !! Gotta check the brakes all around soon.....as well as tear down the wrecked runner. The price for the glass was $140 in hampton, $230 here in town at Danny's. I usually go local but that's $90 towards the carpet !!!

After work today, trailered the wrecked T4R to my friend's house that owns the trailer, then got the 2 main pieces of the running boards mounted. With the running boards being from a newer model, i used the lowest hole on the 'truck's' bracket and drilled a new hole for all 6 brackets' upper hole. My friend Lenny fixed the rear wiper using a pc from the wrecked wiper assembly, he showed me a piece of plastic that was broke. He let me drive it in his garage to lay on the floor to do the drilling.

Tomorrow, getting all 3 new wiper blades, a new muffler that i'll install to quiet her down, some black stainless sheet metal trim screws to screw the running board end caps in place. I'll take pics to show how i altered and rigged the end caps & brackets. I know it's silly to get excited about the engine running but it's nice driving it while i work on it.

Pics and possibly a b4 and after video w/ the muffler install tomorrow, hopefully.
