My AC compressor chirps every time it kicks on

When I have the AC on and the compressor starts up I'll hear a chirp and the RPM will drop a bit before stabilizing. I don't know if I should be concerned, what could be causing this?

Apart from the belts is there any maintenance that the AC system requires? (like compressor oil)

Tighten your belt

That chirp is the belt. Adjust the tensioner out a little bit or replace the belt. If you remove the skid plate and look up from the ground to the A/C compressor you'll see the adjustment pulley just below it. Slightly loosen the pulley bolt (don't take it out) and then you'll see another bolt facing 90 degrees from the pulley bolt and adjust it so the pulley comes out just a tad more. Tighten down the first bolt and check for tension. What I like to do, as I don't have a belt tension tool, is just press down firmly on the Power Steering belt or Alternator belt to get an idea of how much tension there should be. That's what the A/C compressor belt should also feel like.

3rd member saying it's the belt. Either misadjusted or belt needs replaced.

That chirp you hear is the belt initially slipping when the load of the compressor kicks on.
I say tighten the ac belt up too.
When was the last time you changed the belt? Is it glazed or worn out?
You don't want to tighten it too much and ruin the roller bearings.

I have this problem still. I replaced the belt with a Toyota one, and I'm between a rock and a hard place.

If I loosen the belt the AC compressor wont chirp when it engaged, but I get constant belt squeak. If I tighten the belt I can make the belt squeak go away, but then the AC compressor (or something) will chirp whenever it engages.

I adjusted the belt tensioner with the skid plate off and the engine running, I only did what was required to make the belt squeak go away. And the belt seems quite tight to me.

Either I glazed the belt when I installed it, or the AC compressor clutch is worn out. It doesn't look misaligned to me. Should I try a belt dressing or a different brand of belt?

Old school mechanics use gasket cinch or belt dressing. Not too much different than rubber cement. It helps resolve a belt that has been glazed.
