My backwards build plan

Hi everyone! I'm a new owner of a 2016 TEP (Trail Edition Premium) with KDSS as of 5 days ago and I just wanted to introduce myself as well as get some help with my plan.

I'm doing this a little differently, as I'm going backwards and going to list my end game plan for my ride, then upgrade accordingly. I want to do it this way so I don't have to go back and do something twice to compensate for something I add later on.

Here it is! 4 miles when I drove off the lot.

<a href="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/Archives/4runner/n-Lx98kk/i-BR5HxH3/A"><img src="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/photos/i-BR5HxH3/0/L/i-BR5HxH3-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

My use for my new ride is mainly daily driving with occasional off roading and road trips. No major rock crawling planned, but lots of mud and light trails!

The plan

I've done a ton of reading here on these forums in the last month and this is what I've come up with so far for my ideal end game (i know, it never ends):

Tires:
BFG KO2 275/70/17 all terrain (I really want 285/70/17 for the look and added clearance, but I'm worried about potential rubbing issues as well as ride quality/gas mileage on roads)

Wheels:
17x8.5 Method Roost wheels. 0 offset, 4.7" backspace
<a href="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/Archives/4runner/n-Lx98kk/i-mNS38PP/A"><img src="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/photos/i-mNS38PP/0/O/i-mNS38PP.jpg" alt=""></a>
Here's a pic on an earlier 5th gen I found on these forums
<a href="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/Archives/4runner/n-Lx98kk/i-XDsC3mv/A"><img src="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/photos/i-XDsC3mv/0/L/i-XDsC3mv-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

Southern Style Slim front bumper:
<a href="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/Archives/4runner/n-Lx98kk/i-MNK8TmT/A"><img src="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/photos/i-MNK8TmT/0/L/i-MNK8TmT-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

Suspension:
I'm still up in the air about this one based on which will work best with the choices above^. I need to pick a lift that can fit either 285's or 275's without rubbing and can carry the weight of the Southern Style slimline bumper (I haven't been able to find the weight of this bumper yet)

So I'm considering these 3 lift options right now (from least expensive to most expensive):

1- Bilstein 5100's all around with 1.5" spacer in the back. This will result in 2.5"front/1.5"rear lift. I'd probably install a diff drop kit just to be on the safe side. This will cost roughly $450-$500

2- OME 3" lift. Cost roughly $1000

3- Toytec Ultimte lift kit. Costs roughly $1300

So how's my plan so far? Any advice you can offer into rubbing issues, front bumper weight issues with certain lifts etc would be of great help. I'm excited to get some mods going but I want to do it right within reason for my budget. Thanks for taking the time and reading!

Nice wheel choice.

From an email from Kevin @ Southern Style the slimline front bumper weighs 65-70lbs depending on options.

I went with OME bp-51 suspension. No idea how is performs yet as it's still in the box. It's also pricey.

a couple things I forgot. I will definitely remove the stock running boards to eventually add the shrockrock nerf bars seen here

<a href="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/Archives/4runner/n-Lx98kk/i-VFmqqNX/A"><img src="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/photos/i-VFmqqNX/0/L/i-VFmqqNX-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

And I will eventually add the TRD Pro front grille even tho it is pricey!
<a href="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/Archives/4runner/n-Lx98kk/i-C6J3C8q/A"><img src="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/photos/i-C6J3C8q/0/L/i-C6J3C8q-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

And last I need to add a little bass to the sound system. I saw this sub on a build thread by Antman
It's a perfect little stealth set up with built in power. It's called the Sound Ordnance B-8PTD

<a href="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/Archives/4runner/n-Lx98kk/i-kc7Q9sk/A"><img src="http://www.dpnimaginations.com/photos/i-kc7Q9sk/0/O/i-kc7Q9sk.jpg" alt=""></a>

I'm hoping this thread can help me figure out the little details and show new owners some cool mods to consider.

@salong so these aren't height adjustable? So it would be a fixed 3"/2" lift front and back?

I keep reading about people running 285's need a body mount chop, which I'm not really looking to do on a new truck. So I guess I need to figure out if I drop down to 275's, will a 3" lift be too high or look odd with the smaller tires.

I like the plan. If you're not looking for adjustable front coilovers, you could check out this kit.
3" Lift W/ Bilstein 5100 Height Adj Coilovers FJ/4Runner

I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that people say a diff drop will help ensure that your CV boots etc stay in tact. And a mechanic said he sees about 4-5 trucks a week coming in because of some problem caused by not doing a diff drop with their lift.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, isn't a diff drop only like $30? At that price I'd rather do it to prevent any future damage due to not having it.

And no need for a diff drop!

Truck should look kick arss with those mods!

wow 3 of you recommended going with this set up back to back. My question is these Bilstein 6112's in the front, with bilstein 5100's in the back, and the 1.5" sway a way rear coils, this pieced together "kit" totals somewhere around $1000. At that price, is it better than the OME or Toytec kits for off road and on road manners? Pros/cons of going this route?

Sounds like a good plan. I would also look into these with the optional 650 or 700 lb coils; Bilstein 6112 Height Adjustable Front Strut Set

I would probably run those with these rear springs; Sway-A-Way 1.5" Lift Rear Coil Set

You could run these with some 5100s or 5160's for rear shocks.

As for rubbing, a little trimming should take care of it and if you take your time nobody will notice where you trimmed.

Can anyone confirm or deny that of the 4 lift options mentioned in this thread:

1) Bilstein 5100's with rear spacers
2) OME 3" lift
3) Toytec Boss/Ultimate
4) Bilstein 6112/5160 (or 5100)

Are the Toytecs the only ones that can be adjusted without having to remove them from the truck? If so, this will probably be the lift I go with so when I add heavier items such as the Southern Style Slim bumper and the Shrockrock nerf bars I can just adjust them as needed.

Now can someone speak to the real world difference between the Toytec Ultimate and the Toytec Boss? The price difference is basically nothing between the 2.

I doubt you'd need a body mount chop with the proper alignment, but many say they wanted new upper control arms after lifting the front 3+ inches.

Also, I owned the Sound Ordnance sub you mentioned earlier in my 4th gen. Let's just say it's not very loud or deep, and definitely not much of a complement to the 5th gen 4Runner sound system which is already mid-range bass heavy. You'd be better off getting an amp and some decent component speakers for just a little more money.

for what you intended use of the 4runner is, the 5100s would be just fine. I run the same setup you are looking at running. 5100s 2.5/ 1/5 and 275 BFGs. No diff drop required, no UCAs needed

I'm no help with the details, but this is not backwards. This is how every build should go - identify the use, then identify the needs to meet the use, then mod accordingly. Welcome to the board, hope you stick around!

ST1FLER I love hearing a vote for the most affordable option! haha. No, seriously, I do tho. Which rear spacers do you use, and do you have any pictures or a thread link where I can see the stance of your 4runner?

Any concerns I should have from the added weight up front from the Southern Style Slimline bumper with this suspension set up?

@salong Thanks for your feedback on the sub. This will probably be the last upgrade I do, so this gives me time to research. I love having bass in my cars. I've had a good sub in every car I've owned since I was 17. But my sub in my 3rd gen 4runner takes up way too much space. I'll have to look around and see what other options I have. Thanks.
