My experience with P0301; Resolved.

I just bought a new injector for $50. How hard is it to change the fuel injector on cylinder #2 and how long does it take?

Both questions weigh greatly on your mechanical abilities. If you are a toyota tech then it would probably be a pretty easy job and take a couple of hours... if you have trouble changing your oil then it would probably be extremely difficult and take two and half days.

The number 2 injector will require removal of the intake manifold and unless you are a pretty qualified mechanic (guessing you aren't, or you probably wouldnt' be asking) then I would take it somewhere.
 
I recently got a flashing CEL and the code P0301 on a road trip on the way home from Detroit. After finding out the code was for Cylinder 1 Misfire, I had a really hard time finding information and others with experience with this code. Found many threads about it, and how it had the owner stumped but not too many actual results. Hopefully this will help someone else in the future.

As stated previously, I got a code P0301 on the way home from a small road trip accompanied by a flashing CEL. It would flash and then go off for a while, or flash and then stay on for a while. I also noticed a bad hesitation during acceleration that seamed to get much better after 2,000 RPM, but not go away. Once back in town I had Advance Auto Parts pull the code and it was Cylinder 1 Misfire.

My first step was to replace the plugs and wires. They needed done anyways, so this seemed like a logical place to start. Unfortunately plugs and wires did not fix the problem. My initial thinking after this was that it was not a coil pack. I figured since each of the three coil packs fired 2 cylinders, the coil pack going bad would cause two misfires rather than one. I'm still not sure if this is the correct thinking or not, but I decided to rule it out officially. I removed the coil pack from cylinder number 1 and switched it with cylinder number 5 coil pack. Then headed to AAP again and had the code pulled. Still a cylinder 1 misfire. Coil pack ruled out.

Next step was to test the fuel injector. I bought a digital multi-meter from Harbor Freight on sale for $1.99. I was unsure how to test the injector, so after a google search I came across a couple of YouTube videos showing exactly how. If you never have looked up these type of videos on youtube before, they can be very helpful. I tested the resistance on the cylinder 1 fuel injector and the multi-meter wouldn't read anything. In general, injectors should be between 11 and 18 ohms, with more specific parameters per model. I also tested injector 3, which read 15.3; and injector 5, which read 14.8. This was all the information I needed. I called Toyota and ordered the injector. Changing the injectors on the passenger side of the engine is not a difficult job if you know your way around the engine bay decently enough. The drivers side is much more difficult and involves removal of the intake manifold.

For the 3 injectors on the passenger side I first had to remove the intake tube between the throttle body and MAF sensor. After this I had to remove the throttle body. If you have never done this, you need to be patient as it is somewhat involved. There are 3 cables on the front that need to be removed, 2 coolant lines, and a vacuum line from the IAC valve (located on the bottom of the TB), a clip for the IAC, clip for the TPS, and then 2 nuts and 2 bolts and you can remove the TB. After removal of the throttle body you have all the access you need to the fuel rail and injectors. There are 2 17mm banjo bolts on both sides of the fuel rail. You can remove these, and then 2 12mm bolts holding the actual fuel rail on. It may take some jiggling but you can then pull the fuel rail up and change the bad injector.

NOTE: EVEN ON THE INJECTORS THAT ARE NOT BAD, YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE O-RINGS ON THE TOP AND BOTTOM. THEY WILL LEAK!

Once the bad fuel injector has been replaced you can put everything back together the way you took it apart (it is also recommended that you change the TB gasket). Start the vehicle and check for leaks on all the injectors. I would also recommend checking the injectors again a couple times over the next day or so to make sure no leaks develop as the engine heats up and pressure builds.

Again, hopefully this helps someone at some point. Sorry there are no pictures but I didn't even think to take any during the process. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll answer them as best I can. Thanks!

Nice post, thanks for all the info. I've been troubleshootin a P0302 code and am almost ready to determine a #2 injector as i've changed plugs and swapped coil packs around just to keep get the same code! It figures the injector I'd be needing to replace is on the driver's side which would probably be beyond my comfort zone to replace. I am going to change the plug wires first though so any more input that might be helpful is greatly appreciated.
And oh yes, I have had that flashing CEL, so hopefully no CAT damage has occurred yet! I keep clearing the code with my reader, but it keeps comin back:ybrick:

That was it. Used a long 3/8 extension as a stethescope and all accessible injectors ticked like a purring kitten except #2. R2'd it and she runs like a dream!
 
Guess what? I now have the same problem with the #4 cyl. Unfortunately #4 and 6 are the only 2 cyls I can't get to with a steth to hear if the injectors are clicking. Already swapped coils around and still pulling a P0304. 98% chance it's the injector. What's the chances of 2 going out in 3 months! Especially both on the drivers side! I paid a mobile mechanic $330 to change #2. I think I'll tackle this one myself for under $100 and a few hours time. Wish me luck!

WTH does "R2'd" mean?

BTW, since you may have had one injector clog and now more I'd guess a problem with either the gas you are buying or the fuel filter.
 
Sorry, R2 means remove and replace. These injectors are not clogging! The first one was electrically intermittemt for a couple months before it just quit working. On this latest one it seems to have stopped working altogether! Shopping for one as we speak.
 
I was just quoted $1168 to replace the 3 injectors on the manifold side at the local Toyota dealership. So paying a guy $330 sounds like a steal! I think I will call around for more quotes.

But I had to register on the site just to say this was dead on and saved me all kinds of trouble.

Had the same symptoms when running on 3 cylinders; crappy idle, completely gutless, check engine light flashing between 1000 and 2500 rpms (give or take). All symptoms were constant. I tested continuity on all fuel injectors. 100% resistance on cylinder 1. Coil was shot. So I pulled all 4 fuel injectors, got them "rebuilt". 1 of which they confirmed dead. So I ordered a re-manufactured one, replaced all the same day, and now the engine runs like a new baby kitten.. err jaguar... or something awesome and fast.

Codes were cylinder misfire, and a couple EGR codes. Was running way too rough to be an EGR only problem.

Random misfire P0301-P0306

New to this. 1998 4runner limited edition V6. Getting P0301-P0306 random misfire codes. Sometimes its all 6 and sometimes it's a couple of cylinders. But only above 2,000 rpm. 2 days ago it held an idle at around 600 rpm for 10 seconds and stalled out. Now it stays running at around 800 rpm, I can throttle up slowly to high rpm and its fine. If I do it fast it bogs out, but stays running. I only get codes when I hold it above 2,000 rpm. The only thing I did was disconnect the 'system' side of the fuel filter and check the flow...seemed adequate, so I reconnected it. Still get the codes and runs poorly. You seem to know your stuff....opinion on where I should be looking to resolve this? Thanks for your time.

Found this on my pdf 4runner/tacoma repair manual.

oh, just want to add a little tid-bit of info...

If the CEL flashes, it's best to pull over and shut down the engine as soon as safely possible. If it is solid, that means the computer recognized an issue, but if it flashes, that's bad news, and to continue to drive/run the engine can result in engine damage.

"If the misfire rate is high enough and the driving conditions will cause catalyst overheating, the MIL blinks when misfiring occurs."

That is a quote from the shop manual on pdf pg 286. In the shop manual, it is on page 'EG-232'.

I was driving my kids to school on Monday or Tuesday morning and even before I left my driveway, the idle was rough. It was idling normally (since I installed the newer throttle body and newer idle air control valve the engine idles normal at 1,000 rpms. So, not too normal) the night before Just after getting to the school, my CEL comes on. I take a lazy way back home and witness my cel flashing and then stop flashing and become solidly lit. This happens about 5 or 6 times before I get to the local autozone. I pull in got me codes read from the OBD II port. The rep. lets me know that there is a p0300 and a p0301 and a sequence of this repeating about 8 times in the past. I think past just that morning. She says I'll probably need my spark plug(s) changed and maybe my wires too.

I get home and remove spark plug number 1 since that is the offending plug. It looks like the plug has some blow by on the ceramic. I pulled number 2 and it is not scorched like this one. And, I think, this is the wrong style. Yes, an electrode on the side, but 4 is unnecessary.

The white portion of the ceramic was covered by the stock ignition cord.

I see no arching or carbon deposits, but I hope replacing it will help my cause if not cure it. I plan on replacing all four since, I believe they are all wrong.

Did the problem continue after the check engine light came on? Was the hesitation only from a stop or did you notice it all the time?

Some people will say one or the other, but when I changed my plugs, I had BOTH. NGK in one head, Denso in the other.

This is because the heads are made in two seprate facilities. depends on which one uses which.

But use ONLY NGK or denso.

So, I got paid today, went to autozone, picked up some plugs:

I have no photo of the new plugs. I installed them already, but they are the correct ones with only one electrode instead of four. And the electrode hovers over the plug end, not to the side that the bosch plugs did in my previous permalink above. I gapped the plugs to 0.031" using my feeler gauge. I used blades 0.015" and 0.016" both equaling 0.031". "Like a glove."

I used antiseize on the threads and made sure not to tighten the plugs too much. I used die electric grease on the spark plug end as it is fitted on the plug when it is installed. I followed this guy's instructions.

Have a 99 3 gen that only gets the flashing check engine for like 10 sec and then disappears pulled the code p0303 which is cylinder 3 misfire.. checked the plugs and wires they were good actually brand new! I just bought this 4runner in which the seller said he just replaced all the enjectures with in 10k miles.... so not sure what's going on he said he had a mechanic look at it and could only come to the conclusion that it was just a "ghost mosfire" now the only time the check engine comes on/flashes is when I'm driving and just floor the throttle.... so not sure where to go from here any input?
 
Been Dealing With This

Earlier last week my '00 Limited with 235K miles started sounding louder and then started stuttering and hesitating when accelerating. Shortly thereafter my CEL came on. Not knowing what it was and being a little annoying, I hammered down. The CEL started flashing. I pulled over and checked my CAT since it sounded like it had a hole in it. Note- my cat has been gutted so there is no filter inside. It's been like this for about a year. I turned around and headed home. As soon as I got home I plugged in my reader and pulled the code for the #6 cylinder misfire. Pissed. I took to the internet and started reading. Instead of ordering just one injector, I decided to take a chance and ordered the pack of 6 off Ebay for $82. It had a lot of good reviews, so, we'll see. I never do that.

I tested the injector resistance and they all read just around 14. According to the manual they should be between 12 and 16.

I cleaned the MAF, changed the coils, ordered new NGK plugs and plug wires. Cleaned the throttle body, replaced the PCV valve and grommet. I also replaced the P/S valve cover gasket and plug tube seals since cyl #1 was leaking oil down the plug tube. Right before I decided to pull the plenum, I ran the truck one more time and pulled the codes. Multiple misfires. That was only after changing the coil packs. I've done everything else since. Now, I'm waiting on the injectors. I'm going to go ahead and replace them all since everything is off. I'm also going to put on a new fuel filter. The only other thing I can imagine being the problem is the O2 sensor. The plugs had carbon on them which, I think, means it's running too rich. I'm pretty sure that's due to me not having the internals of the CAT.

I've looked high and low and read a ton the past few days about this issue. Honestly, it shouldn't even be the injectors at the mileage but we'll see. These engines rarely have any major issues. If what I've done/am doing doesn't work, then I'll replace the O2 sensors and put on a CAT. Anything other than that I'd have to check the compression and fuel line compression.
